It is worth buying a GTX 1080 right now ?

Im building a new pc and i was going to put a GTX 1080 on it. I just saw that the new GTX 1170 was coming out soon and it will probably outperform the GTX 1080 for maybe the same price that the 1080 is right now.

The problem is that my last pc broke days ago, so i dont really want to be the whole summer without pc/gaming for waiting for the new graphics to come out on august/september (as ill wait for the assemblers to release their graphics, dont want to buy a founders edition).

I dont really know what i should do, as i dont know how the new gpus will really perform and how much they will cost, and most important, when they will be avaliable for buying .

The last time I checked, price were almost around MSRP. As of now, it is probably one of the card that is retailing for almost its MSRP.

However, tesla is around the corner, but it is a 12nm card on TSMC, so the upgrade should be around 10%-15% over Pascal.

Even when it comes out. It will likely be difficult to find one in stock.

It’s not as if the 1080 will suddenly become a bad GPU. Since you don’t want to blow your summer waiting on something you might be able to buy. Plus with your current system busted. I’d say buy the 1080 now. It’s a great GPU.

Waiting is something usually reserved for somebody with an adequate backup. Which you currently do not have.

If you can afford to buy now and buy again later then I'd recommend a 1070TI. Some places have them for about a $100 less and the performance gap is negligible.

As velocityg4 stated, "Even when it comes out. It will likely be difficult to find one in stock.". First round of any new gen is usually sub-par compared to the OC'd editions that come out after and those usually take about a month or two for the highest clocks. Factor in supplies and the wait can be even longer.

Cards less strong than the best will sell at about the same price/performance ratio.
If GTX1080 is the right power for you, go ahead and buy.
New cards cost the manufacturer less to build, usually because of smaller component construction, but that just means added profit.
They will be sold for what the market will bear.

If you want to hedge your bet a bit, buy a EVGA GTX1080. They offer a free 90 day trade up policy.

if the old pc video card is still good you can reuse it into the new pc or if your going with intel build use the ipgpu till the newer nvidia gpu drop. if the old pc power supply or drive went south. you can buy a new power supply or hard drive then swap them into the new build when your ready to buy.

1070 TI over 1080 Definitely, As all of Nvidia x80 series cards have always lead to be the one of the worst choices for gamers due to the fact that You get very similar performance for a cheaper price in the 1070 TI, and if you want performance better than a 1080, you just go for a 1080 TI.

It was same situation in the 900 series where a majority of the people bought a GTX 970 or a GTX 980 TI, leaving those that purchased a GTX 980 feeling quite hosed off and also feeling like their money was poured down the sewage drains.
