I'm sorry to hear about this issue that you encounter with the WD My Passport external HDD. I'd advise you to try initializing & formatting the HDD from another computer as well. Did you leave the external drive connected while the computer/laptop was in sleep mode before beginning the initialization? Since it shows the error 'Disk is write protected', I'd strongly recommend you take a look at the article from our knowledge base that can give you some troubleshooting steps on how to resolve it. Another thing you could try is opening the Command Prompt (Run as administrator) and then use the DiskPart commands to clear the read-only attribute (write protection). Just make sure you select the proper drive letter that is assigned to your external WD My Passport.
