I have read a number of notes here about "no more free data" on
Verizon which seemd to "bad" to be true.

But today after trying various times to access VZW data through the
#777 number, I finally disconnected my computer, then manually dialed
the #777 number to hear the Verizon basso voiced announcer tell me
that "...the number I have reached is not in service...."

So it looks like Verizon finally pulled the plug on "free" Internet
access!

You can't dial #777 through voice, it doesn't do anything.

If you were having data problems...they're unrelated to the fact that
you called up and got that message.

I just used my Mobile Office Kit to dial #777 and it connected OK at 7:40
pm March 6, 2004.

I used my at 8:12 and it connected fine....I called the number first and got

If you dial #777 manually you will always get a "this number is not in
service" message..

My 1xrtt works, and dialing #777 on the phone gives me that error.

In addition, Nights and weekends are when maintainence is usually done, and
it may be temporarily unavailable.... Why do you think it's FREE?!?!?!

Ummm, because it's not business hours and they
have bandwidth to burn? (which is why they would
pick that time to do maintenance).

Obvious to some of us, unfortunately not to others.. The person that started
this thread tried #777 on a weekend, it didn't work when he tried it, he
panicked, and even though others don't have any problem, it was a weekend,
and rather than try and understand the limits and what was happening, he
immediately started this whole "sky is falling" thread, but never thought
about what it might have really been....

There is little time to think if you are going to win

OK, OK, guys, I believe you...

Now the 64 dollar question (at least I figure its worth that to me):

I'm using Windows Dial-up-Networking and it is obvious from this
original message, I can't connect. So...how or better what should I do
to connect to #777?

Is there some .scp file I should creat to get the darn cell (I'm using
a Motorola 265) to connect. I'm looking at the "properties" section
under scripting asking this because I can get the cell/PC combo to
connect to the dial-up side of my cable ISP both via their program
(dialer) and using Windows dial-up networking with a .scp file they
supply.

I read a previously referenced (here) article about "Setting Up Data
on Verizon" (@ URL cell.uoregon.edu) where the author relates
connecting through dialing #777 he could get low speed (qnc) and
high-speed or 1XRTT (541....). He indicates a different modem
initialization string for both (but using Win dial-up I don't know how
to set this!) I would also presume there has to be a script of some
kind to get the #777 to accept the Username/password.

So any help would be appreciated either point me to a web site or
discuss here.

Thanks in advance.

One thought:

I have a Motorola v710, which is likely set up similar to the way your
265 is.

The v710 pretty much automatically connects at the highest rate the
local connection gives it (up to 1XRTT). On pretty much the entire
VZW digital network, that speed IS 1X.

If you're trying qnc/qnc as a login, and the phone is connecting at 1X
speeds, it will not even remotely work.

login: (your10digitphonenumber)@vzw3g.com
(i.e. 3305551212@vzw3g.com)
password: vzw

If you're doing this already, I don't know what to tell ya...
