I've enabled "TPU switch", "D.O.C.P" and "O.C tuner" (Which is basically just auto overclock) and my system is slower. Is this common?

I've dusted off some old hardware and I'm in the process of upgrading it overtime.

[My specs]
asus a88x-pro
amd a10-6800k
"Dark" 1600mhz ddr3 ram {EDIT: 2 sticks}
Raider Power supply (650 watts)
Radeon HD 7870 Graphics card
Cooler Master Evo 12
1tb hdd
1tb hdd

Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to overclocking and if it would be better to manually overclock then I would do so. I unfortunately already tried, only to make my system slow or unstable.
(and yes I reset my system bios after unstable overclocks)
