I've heard the i5 is better for gaming, if that's true why does everyone go for i7?? I'm confused

Really on YouTube or when they talk about a good gaming pc, because I've heard i7 decreases the performance.

i5 and i7 have the same single core performance, and both have 4 cores, but i7 has hyper threading which makes it work like 8 cores, but games do not require 8 cores, they require max 2-3, so an i7 offers no advantage over i5 in gaming, but no disadvantage either except i7s tend to run a little hotter than i5s

The i5 is not 'better' but represents a better value for gaming since hyper-threading (difference between i5 and i7) has little impact upon gaming currently. I don't think there would be a decrease in performance for gaming if using an i7, just not enough of an increase in performance to justify the price difference.

So if I wanna play games like bf3 and crysis 3 and surf the web for stuff like yt and maybe upload a video from time to time, is buying the i7 a waste of money for me??

there was a decrease in performance as games tried to use the logical cores as well as the real cores which decreased performance I think that this has been fixed now. But there is no benefit at the moment in gaming to having an extra 4 logical cores (there might be to having an extra 2 phyiscal cores). Hence the extra cash is best spent on a GPU upgrade.

Better spending the extra cash on a better GPU(s). i5 3570k will do just fine.

Thanks for the comments, I think after all I'm gonna buy the i5 since I don't need the i7.
