it shouldn't be a problem since all phones (well, android and windows phone since iphones will never support expandable memory) both systems has in system formatting of the memory card...
My first thought is it is probably a sdhc or sdxc ( sd high capacity or sd extra capacity) card. Some phones don't support sdhc/sdxc cards. Verify your phone supports them. Second thought is it could be a dead sd card.

It shouldn't but I had one that didn't like it formatted in NTFS going into the phone but raw or fat and it was fine.
As the other person said, it could be the size too. Some phones don't like big cards.
