Hey all,
I have an Iwill kk266-r mobo (yes i know its old). I'm trying to upgrade the proc, but i'm a little apprehensive as to what frequency it can manage. I know its Socket A, so can a Duron 1.8 Ghz Socket A proc work in my mobo? I assume it can, but i want to make sure. has anybody had a kk266-r and upgraded it?

WOW! That thing even has an ISA slot on it, hven't seen one of those in a while. <A HREF="http://www.iwillusa.com/products/ProductDetail.asp?vID=39&CID=#" target="_new">Here's the manufacturer's links for your mobo</A> They also have you're <A HREF="http://www.iwillusa.com/supports/manual/kk266.pdf" target="_new">owners manual</A> available in .pdf format.

Looks like it will take and Duron, shouldn't have any problem with the 1.8GHz version. But if you ask me, I'd get a mobile XP2400+ 1.8GHz <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-400&depa=0" target="_new">($78 @ newegg.com)</A>, it would be WAY faster than a Duron. <b>(somebody correct me if this won't work)</b>

It's an old chipset and not a very good one at that. KT133a was an ugly dog of a chipset.

I hold it (and VIA) responsible for the bad reputation of AMD CPU of the era. Words of unstability and incompatibility... your question brings back a lot of bad memories...

Your MB uses SDRAM 133Mhz, so puttin a recent CPU on it would be a waste of money. Iwill says you can go up to 1.4ghz, IMO anything above that is wasted anyway.

maybe you could get a bundle like this one🙁Chaintech 7NJL6 Socket A Motherboard and AMD Sempron 2500+ Processor)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1111302&CatId=188

and one of those🙁Ultra 512MB PC2700 DDR 333MHz Memory)
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=576573

for about 150$ USD you'll have a nice little upgrade

I have that board in a box, I upgraded it 3 or 4 months ago. I thought it was an ok board. It ran my 768mb of PC133 ram and old hard drives.
prolly one of their best boards.

Hey, read that link again Snotling, it says "-1.4GHz <i>and higher</i>" It should work fine as long as the BIOS is up to date.

BTW, do you have a problem with using markups in your posts?

I ran an Athlon XP 1900+ on mine.

when I say anything above 1.4 is wasted it's because of the limited memory bandwith.

the problem I have with markups, is that they varry from one forum to the other some are plain HTLM but others are not. I like the copy-paste thing, also because you don't end up hastily clicking a disguised porn link.

Last I heard, no one has been very successful with any of the KK266 series motherobards, not with CPU's newer than Palomino. I think I recall something about capacitor replacements being needed to make even Palominos to work reliably.

I think the following thread encapsulates the KK266 story.

<A HREF="http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=247250&highlight=kk266" target="_new">http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=247250&highlight=kk266</A>

I'm not sure why some socket A motherboards have so much trouble while other don't.

I don't have an Iwill mobo but I do have another KT133A mobo, an Epox EP-8KTA3PRO. At one time or other installed in this motherboard I've had a Duron 600 (Spitfire), a 600 @1112 Mhz, A Thunderbird @1.5 Ghz (and up to 1.6 Ghz), a Tbred B XP1700+ at stock 1.466 Ghz, overclocked @1.875 Ghz, and a mod'd XP1700+ running at 2.1 Ghz.

That very same mod'd CPU I've also installed in a really old Abit KT7 (no A) and ran it up to 2 Ghz (but at 20 x 100).

I learned a lot getting those upgrades and overclocks to work but not enough to explain why similar upgrades don't work in the Iwill mobos.

I suggest you check the other posts in the Iwill forum at <A HREF="http://www.pcper.com" target="_new">http://www.pcper.com</A>. (formerly AMDMB.com but no longer AMD only). There may have been developments for the KK266 of which I am not aware.

<b>A mind is a terrible thing</b>

the kt266a (second revision) will take upto an XP 2600+ 266fsb. The origional board revision wouldnt take above a Palimino 2100+ without doing the capacitor removal and hacked bios.
I thought about that for mine since I have the origional KT266 board. But with my luck I would end up without a computer.
Going to build a new one here soon as they have some 939 boards with both an agp and pci-e slot.

Thanks for the info but we are talking about KT133A motherboards, specifically Capt_vodka's Iwill KK266-R (non plus version, I think).

sorry, mine is a plus R.
Great board btw.

Sorry sturm, I don't think that is likely to happen or if it does it will not be a verry popular or effective solution.

AGP has a collection of hardware characteristics that are unique to it and requires frequent touch-ups at the software level.

Both the chipset makers and the GPU makers (wait... ATI, NVIDIA, INTEL... that's the same people!) will be more than eager to leave it all behind and forget about it. Off course, they'll make some scaled down versions of their lower end GPUs for a few years... like they still do with PCI.

My Guess is that by the end of 2006 no new "high end" GPU will be made in AGP.
