Hi there
My Nikon Coolpix 775 has suffered a (suspected) jammed lens mechanism for a
second time, producing "System Error" when switched on/off, which disables
picture-taking (other functions - playback, PC transfer etc - are OK)
This happened the first time under warranty and Nikon (UK) cleaned it and
returned it at no cost. Nice people. So far, I've used a soft brush round
the visible gaps between the lens parts to no avail.
It's now three years old, but otherwise fit for use, so no urgent need for
an upgrade. But I'm wondering about my options. So:
1. Is my diagnosis of a dirty and therefore jammed lens needing a clean
likely to be right (lens not retreating into the case, generating System
Error). If not, any likely alternatives?
2. If so, what's the likely cost of cleaning it and where's the best place
to go (I'm based in Shropshire, UK).
3. If the answer to that is "a lot" or "a long way away".. is this the sort
of thing that you'd even *think* about unscrewing the cover and trying
yourself (I've had the case off a PC and can fit a new plug or wall light..
but I'm no engineer!)
4. If I were to buy a new one on the basis that repair/shipping cost was
approaching replacement cost (2Mp cameras seem rather cheaper than 3 years
ago!), what's a reasonable equivalent.. and if I was to do a bit of
upgrading (as a complete amateur who wants nice family snaps, a few of which
can safely blow up to A4 size) - what would you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance, and with apols for any dumb newbie aspects to my post
