Java applets not working

I'm stumped, the applets just dont work on IE 5.5 SP1, javascript works fine, the applets work fine on opera, its not a problem with the security settings in internet explorer - i have tried reseting to default etc, installed java development kit, still no change, any help is welcome as i am going to try and make a website using java applets and without being able to see them it makes it difficult

Any ideas/suggestions/fixes welcome

the last time i had this problem..i had done everything you had done...turns out someone has installed aol and that screwed everything up(as if that was a surprise)..normally once the MS java gets messed up..if you have reinstalled it and all that..backup everything..format/reload.
