Hello, :)

So, how is everyone doing on their judging? So far, after 23 games played, I
have doled out a 9, an 8 and two 7's on the plus side. On the minus side, I
got two 1's and two 2's, while the 3's are leading with five games rated at
that level so far. My average sits just below 4.5.

Is anyone doing any better?

Oh, and before anyone asks, I did email Stephen about whether a message like
this would be okay, provided I left out any and all details about the games
themselves.

Cheers,

J.

I'm not an official judge, but I am a little dissapointed this year.
I've only played six though; 7, 6, 5, 5, 3, 1 are the scores so far.
Good job I didn't enter this year otherwise there would have been
another one-pointer there.

I've only finished with six games so far. I've given one 9, one 6, one 5,
two 4's, and a 3.

I've "completed" 32 of the now 36 games, but about eight of those I want
to spend a bit more time with before establishing a rating
(quality-wise, those eight games are all over the place).

Out of the 24 that I'm done with, I've provisionally given out one 10,
one 9, and two 8's. I say "provisionally" because there's still have a
month to make up my mind, but in reality those are pretty solid numbers.
The average is at 4.6.

I've played 11 of the games and my ratings so far are:

9, 6, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3, 1, 1, 1, not rated

(The not rated one I couldn't get to work.)

My average rating is just 3.7. Ouch! I didn't actually realise I'd been
giving such bad ratings on average till just now. Maybe I've just been
unlucky or maybe this year there's only going to be one exceptional game.

Do you know that everyone except authors can judge? That means everyone
except selected few IS an official judge.

BTW: I played 18 games and my average is about 5.5.

> Is anyone doing any better?

I'm enjoying the games! I've played 14 of them so far (currently posting
this to take a short break from #15). Since my scores don't count anyway,
I'm using a 1 to 10 system with half-points. I won't bore anybody with an
explanation of what the scores mean (until after the contest, anyway), but
so far:

9.5 (one)
9.0 (four)
8.0 (two)
7.5 (one)
7.0 (one)
6.5 (four)
3.5 (one)

So it's averaging about 7.0. At this rate, I should be able to finish them
all before official results are announced. Waiting is so, so difficult! I'm
looking forward to all the post-comp chatter, posting my reviews and reading
all the others. Come on, November 15th, hurry up already!

It would help if I could divide. The average for these scores is about 7.5.

I've only rated 9 games so far...I feel way behind.

I can't give my scores yet, because I generally normalize them (that
is, redistribute them so that my favorite game gets a 10, my least
favorite gets a 1, and they're roughly evenly distributed between
those points). Also, for this reason, statistics of how many games got
each rating wouldn't mean much: I can guarantee now that I'll give an
average score of very close to 5.5, whether this is the best ever or
worst ever competition.

I can, however, give my impressions of the 9 I've played so far:

I. Two are very, very strong games. Neither would make my "top 10
games of all times" list, but I'd strongly recommend either to anyone
who asked, whether or not we were having a competition. Actually,
that's not true--they're almost polar opposites...I'd probably
recommend one of them to some people, the other to some others, and
both only to a fairly small number of people. But still.

II. Three were good games, which I'd call definitely worth the
download and an interesting time.

III. Two were fair-to-middling games, which were competently executed
but nothing special.

IV. Two I did not like.

Either I got lucky with the 9 games I've played so far, or this is
comp with a better-than-average median game. (Usually I think the
median game falls into Category III.)

Hmm. Newsreader ate my post. Apologies in advance for the
double post if this is one...

I've had a better experience. I've seen four games I consider
truly excellent so far. I've also seen eleven that are mind-rendingly
awful, and twelve that were basically solid. My average score so
far seems to be about 4.4. Judging from the blurbs, there's one game
left where I will be terribly disappointed if it doesn't end up being
at least an 8.

As this is my first time judging in the comp, I'm choosing not to assign
scores until I'm done. I've completed 7 games so far (in the order chosen
for me by comp04.z5), but I'm not impressed yet. I would say one of them
was "pretty good" (maybe a 7), one was awful, and the others have been
mediocre.

Well, it sounds like everyone thinks it is a pretty good comp, but the
only problem, being an author, is that I always think they're talking
about my game whenever they say: 4 9's, 1 8, 3 7's, 2 5's, and one 1.
I'm constently looking at the post 50 times to see if they hinted at my
game. I can't wait for the results.

I'm not eligible to be a judge (since I'm an entrant), but I've been
invited to participate in a separate poll of my three favourite comp
games, and to that end, and also for my own interest, I have been
playing and rating the games nonetheless.

So far I've played, or at least looked at, 24 of the games and rated
22 of them. To date I've awarded one 9, one 8 and three 7s (so if I
stopped now I'd have a bit of a problem nominating my third
favourite). At the bottom end of the scale I've been a bit more
lenient than some, awarding one 2, two 3s, and one 3.5 (perhaps
because I'm mentally reserving a score of 1 for an extreme of
direness that no game may actually manage to sink to). The mean
score of the 22 I've awarded so far is 5.76.

Since the points I'm awarding won't actually count for anything in
the Comp, I'm not attempting to be particularly scientific. The
rough scale I'm working with is:

10 This game is outstanding.
9 This game had me on the edge of my seat: fascinated, moved, and
keen to find out what happens next.
8 I really liked this game and it has an edge over those I rated
7.
7 I liked this game quite a lot.
5-6 A worthy, solid effort but the writing/plot/idea was a bit
uninspiring or the implementation had some rather obvious flaws.
4 The author tried, but it didn't come off (poor writing, too
many bugs or whatever)
2-3 The author probably tried, but the result is poor.
1 The author clearly didn't even try (or else positively tried
to do something annoying).

I have now rated 16 pieces:

8: 3 times
7: 3 times
6: 2 times
5: 5 times
3: 2 times
1: 1 time

Here a 5 is mildly enjoyable, and an 8 is very good. I'd recommend
anything I've given a 7 or above, so that's 6 out of 16 at the moment.

Greetings,
Victor

LOL
Same here! I've not had much time to play the other games to compare them
to mine, I've just played one of them (but had to use hints) and I'm not
sure whether playing many of the others will depress me.

I was going to give your game a "9" but then I found a massive bug in
it and decided to give it a "1" instead.

(Just kidding. I don't know which one you did; your name doesn't
appear in the games list, so you must be using a pseudonym.)

I, too, know the feeling. But I'd like to suggest that playing quite
of a few of the other games should prove interesting -- you'll
certainly find quite a variety.

Also, once the judging period is over, your having played at least
several of the other games and formed your own opinion of them might
help create a frame of reference for reading the reviews.

Same here. With each set of scores, I wonder if that's with or without mine
included. :)

I'm trying to play them all. I'm roughly halfway through now, having played
18 games so far (it happens that I played the two which are no longer
participating shortly before it was announced). I have emailed comments to a
few other authors, and if any author wants a peek at a draft of my review
for your game, just email me. It's against the rules to post comments about
any game yet, but I think it's okay to email the author directly. By the
same logic, I welcome feedback too.

For a second I thought you were serious and my heart skipped a beat lol.

As of this afternoon, I have finished all of the other competition games.
I've marked my scores (can't vote, of course, but it gives me benchmarks),
picked my miss congeniality choices, written all the reviews, and am
anxiously awaiting November 16th.

As a poll, I'm curious about others' progress at this point. Half-way
through the games? Just getting started? Done, or almost done? Going to
finish them all before November 16th? No scores, no titles, no opinions --
I'm just looking for more trivial competition chat of the harmless kind,
while the days slowly drop away.

I've waded my way through 18 of the games. And "waded" is the correct
word for the last few I've gone through unfortunately. While there's
been one game I've given 9 to (I'll give you a clue which one it is:
it's been entered in this year's IFComp), nothing else so far has
rated better than 6 and the majority have fallen in the 1-3 category.
I've written reviews of the games I've played so far although I've
noticed that most of my reviews seem to contain nothing but criticism
for the games in question; then again, when the games in question are
downright awful it's difficult to find anything positive to say about
them. I think the best thing I could find to say about the last game I
played was that it was easy to click on it and select delete.

I'm also an author in the comp so my ratings don't count for anything.

I've got through all the Inform and TADS 2/3 games. I don't have any
of the other interpreters handy, so that's probably all I'll wind up
doing.

I'm done, and I've written my reviews. I expect some interesting discussion

I'm in a very similar position to you, except that I have one game
left to play and I've yet to finalize my Miss Congeniality choices
(though I'm just about certain what they'll be).
