I've now been pondering the idea of purchasing a prebuilt gaming desktop for some time now. I've been playing Blizzard games and attempted to play ARK on my Acer Aspire laptop, and it has been sufficient for me as an everything laptop. My brother in law just received a ridiculous set up for a gaming desktop, and I've decided it's time I join him. Previously I was looking to buy a prebuilt machine, but I am now willing to build my own PC because I'm very determined to get this moving. I'm curious how powerful of a desktop I could build for $600 - $1000 for everything. Also am wondering how necessary it would be to have SUCH a powerful desktop if I'm not going to stretch its capabilities. Blue LEDs + Windows preferred.

Updated: I've searched around online, and I've found a costly set up that I think would satisfy me. I have no experience doing this so I would appreciate it if you guys gave me some feedback on if this build is bad/neutral/ or a good price for what I'm about to list. I also would like to know if there are any other required components that I left out such as some cables or anything really (or if anything here isn't compatible with one another).

My theoretical build persists of these parts (If it isn't listed then I did not include it in the cost so let me know please):

-Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan $34.99
-AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W FD8350FRHKBOX Desktop Processor $174.99

-Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive $49.99

-LG Black Blu-ray Burner SATA WH16NS40 - OEM $58.99
-3x Power Up! T12025 120mm Case Fan - 4 Pin Connector 12VDC, 0.25A (OEM) $9.99

-Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound, 3.5 Grams $6.85
-Sades HiFi Stereo Bass Headset Headband 3.5mm PC Notebook Pro Gaming with Mic $14.98
-CM Storm Devastator - LED Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Combo Bundle (Blue Edition) $31.47
-150FT 150 FT RJ45 CAT5 CAT5E Ethernet LAN Network Cable Blue Brand New $8.89
The total comes to about $1,146.33 after taxes (assuming shipping is free). This doesn't include a monitor or speakers or LED lights (which i can do without). Is this a reasonable price for what I'm getting thus far? If you guys have a better set up for a cheaper price please let me know!
- Monitor + Speakers ??

I purchased 2x4GB Ballistix RAM
Intel Core i5 4690k cpu
Gigabyte radeon r9 270x gpu
Corsair 80+ gold 600 psu
Asus z97 ATX motherboard
1TB hdd Westers digital
256ssd samsung pro
Antec 900 Case
212 evo fan and heating
Asus optical disk drive
I've never built a pc before in my life and I sat down(mainly stood up) after I got all the parts and worked for 9 hours straight to put the damn thing together. It runs like a champ and I'm currently playing every game I'd imagine on it. Great purchase, but I'm sad that no one answered EITHER of my posts until an entire month after the fact. Oh well... I made the right decision independently.

Sorry about that. I wish I would have replied sooner. Good GPU and CPU choices though. I personally would have gone with a Closed Loop Cooler for my CPU to be honest. I don't trust the air coolers.

I'm thinking about actually building my first gaming pc. I have a decent budget of $900. honestly, you could build an Intel based, over clocking pc with a gtx 970 included for roughly the same price
