Hi I'm kinda new to the pc scene and wanted to get into it, and during one my classes at high school I've been offered to build a junk pc and keep. So my problem is that I managed to grab some parts but I would like to know where i improve on, I know its outdated but bare with me.

12/12/16 UPDATE

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X 2 5600+

Motherboard: ASUS HP Motherboard M2N68-LA NARRA2-GL8E

RAM: 6GB of DDR2

HDD: Western Digital 500gb

PSU: Huntkey GreenStar 550W

Tower: Don't know, took a random empty case

CPU Fan: Stock AM2 fan

Graphics card: EVGA 2GB DDR5 750ti FTW

I'm aware that I wont be playing anything past 2010 prob but If I could upgrade what could I push?

It is an AM2 board, likely with an athalon processor... MAYBE a dual core if you're lucky. An Athalon 64 x2 would be your best hope.
It will probably have a 4GB max for the DDR2, which is fine as you have 4x1GB sticks.
it has a PCI Express slot so maybe something like a 750ti at the very most.

A power supply with a dial? That doesn't seem right. Pictures?
CPU fan will be needed. Any AM2 compatible cooler should work.

Case should work as long as it is a micro ATX case like the motherboard.

Main things will be to likely get a better psu so you can get a half decent graphics card in there.

The CPU could be a number of different models, but it can take the AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx so you may be able to get one of them cheap on ebay if it has an athlon.

Once you have a half decent psu and one of the above CPUs, you could get any number of graphics cards and still play tons of games including some recent less demanding games.

I would be checking out the used markets for things like:

Phenom II X4 955 or 965 (depending on whats already in the system)
500w PSU from a reputable brand, doesnt need to be anything too special, just a reliable safe unit.

One of the following GPUs:
GTX 660
GTX 660 ti
7850
7870
7950

Should be AM3:

It is an AM2 board... the Phenom II will absolutely not fit.
