First off are these builds ok? And if a part is not shown as "in stock" but has a price available and merchants, will we be able to get these parts or will we have to pick different ones?

those builds look fine just dont get NEX power supply get a G2, or GS

and depending on where you get it they should receive more items if they arent in stock. you can always shop around to see who has the best deal. newegg and amazon are great places

i5-6600 is not good value cpu, better get the i5-6500,will do the same job. Also you can cut rhe motherboard to a h170, ram doesn't need to be 3000mhz as well, that's a waste of money, just get the standard 2133mhz,you won't feel a difference. Also 980 is a terrible performer for the money, either 980ti or r9 390.And yes, nex is bad, go for g2

The PC's will be used for editing a bit as well and rendering, not enough to justify an i7 in my eyes but the 6600 does offer a bit more power than the 6500 if I am not mistaken?

Yep, I second this. No point going for z-series motherboards if you're not buying an unlocked processor.

If I were you I'd try pick up all the parts from the same retailer to save on delivery costs.

If I get hacked Bios's for the Z170's we can overclock the i5 6600 non k edition. And to be honest picking a motherboard IS the least we know about.

Well you could overclock it, thing is, when gaming, even when doing other stuff, overclcoking won't give you that noticeable performance increase. Overclocking nowadays is more like "i have the money I want to have some fun", no longer you see the overclocks like the Q6600, 2.4GHz base, overclockable to 3.6GHz with ease. Now even with the best cooling and motherboard you get a 15-20% overclock at best, why bother? Just save the money on cooler, cpu, motherboard and upgrade 1 year sooner.

How would you do the builds? We are in the $1500 - $2000 range and want a good upgrade path without rebuilding from practically scratch.
