I was debating between IPS and TN and my buddy told me to go IPS.. he said the response time is negligible but the color and image quality on IPS was noticeable. I have recently purchased this monitor:

http://h20386.www2.hp.com/MalaysiaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=J7Y62AS&opt=&sel=MTO

and im having some issues with the image quality, Im coming from a smaller TN screen so im wondering if this is a IPS problem or just with this particular model. the particular problems im seeing is that there is a slight blur on moving images, i can still makes things out but if a person is walking into a room for example their face is a little bit blury until they stop moving, and also the blacks seem almost unacceptably bad, it was very distracting watching avengers in landscape where the "black" bars at the top and bottom were almost pure grey... I was not even able to watch the movie.

the colors all look outstanding im seeing more detail in my player model in destiny then I have ever seen before, a game I have been playing for 2 years and on multiple displays, i was really impressed by that. I have noticed all of the colours have kind of a soft glow to them i dont know if that is the reason the blacks are so bad. the monitor is also glossy so Im not sure if that is the culprit.

im thinking about exchanging it for something else such as:

this TN: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236302

or

this IPS: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236393

it will be used primarily for console gaming and movies. I will always be sitting dead center so viewing angles are not of the biggest concern. ANY help at all would be greatly appreciated as I need to make a decision quickly at the sales on both of these monitors in my local store end tomorrow 😛

Solution
Yeah, no, it's not an IPS; it's a VA, that's a typo on their end then. I highly recommend you go with a VA; mainly because you said that you can't stand grey blacks when watching movies, assuming 1920x817/bluray wide format source. Neither IPS or TN can achieve black = black, only VA can, to a certain point of course. However, is enough to completely hide the black bars if the room is dark, which adds to immersion. I will look around for you, and I will edit this post with a suggestion or two that you can look at.

All the best!
sorry I accidentally down voted with a misclick, cant undue for some reason. strange on the bestbuy page it says that monitor was IPS. I only used the newegg link because the bestbuy website was off and on today so i figured it was a more reliable link.

realistically im just looking for the best monitor I can get for around 300$ CDN from bestbuy.ca (have gift cards)

so comparing the two asus monitors I would gain better blacks with the VA vs IPS but I will loose some color fidelity?

how do IPS and VA monitors deal with that blur effect I was noticing on my HP monitor? or is that more of a problem with the individual monitor and not the display technology?

That used to be true in the past, modern VA you only lose a few degress of the horizontal viewing angle. There are plenty of VA's that are on par with IPS monitors color. The blur effect I guess you're talking about ghosting. This is because LCD's are always on, and so it's got a response time. This is measured differently, and should be completely ignored. However, the higher refresh rate, the less blur, as the display will update faster at 144 Hz than 60 Hz.

1 / 60 =
1 / 144 =

Miliseconds =

ok great! it seems they all have a similar refresh rate so i may be experiencing ghosting on all of them... my old 24" samsung didn't seem to be very noticeable in that regard so the HP must just be doing a poor job with that.

in terms of the TN asus, with that I would expect worse blacks and worse color reproduction? Its marketed as a gaming monitor, I would assume that would be more responsive with less ghosting but i guess thats not the case?
(im only asking because im noticing that the VA one is probably not in stock anymore haha 😛 )
