2 Weeks ago I bought built a computer with Q9550 and Asus P5E3 MB. But the computer did not post. Today I RMAed the CPU and MB for refund and ordered the Latest and Greatest Corei7 920 with ASUS P6T Deluxe MB.

Only additional charge was 30$ + restocking fee. Hopefully will have a system running by this weekend.

Anybody else trying Corei7 ?

Ok the parts came in today and I am typing the post with my new Corei7 system.

First heres my config

Corei7 920 2.66GHz , baby core i7
Asus P6T Deluxe , the basic one
Asus 4850
Patriot 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 , 1.7V 7-7-7-20

I know why go for a X58 when I am still using dual channel, I bought this ram for a Q9550 and X38 build. I turned down the DRAM bus voltage to 1.64 and it still worked. CPUZ said it DRAM freq was 535Mhz (is that what 1333 rams run at ?) and still ran with same timing 7-7-7-20, great little ram.

The build went without a hitch. The board came with BIOS version 703, I immediately updated it to new 805. I turned off Visualization and Speed step for now. Then I ran Prime95 blend test in 8 threads and in just seconds the system heated upto 100 Cs. I stopped and ran the test on 4 threads and the chip heated to 80 Cs and kept rising in 30 secs. I ordered a http://www.moddersmart.com/en/noctua-nh-u12p-se1366.html Looks like a Thermalright 120 but 10 bucks cheaper and with two fans. Hopefully this should bring down those temps.

But I never expected intel stock to suck so much, I knew I was going to hit 70 Cs easy , but 100 Cs is shocking. At idle the temps stay at 40 Cs, I just played Sins of solar empire and the temps went upto 57 Cs at 60 steady fps. So no OCing for me untill the new cooler gets here.

Just played Crysis at 1680 x 1050 but all medium settings, got be 55-60 consistent fps. By temps did not go above 58 Cs

Slomo the 1600DDR3 are all at 1.65V, my ram is only .05V higher, I think I can turn this voltage back to 1.64V and sacrifice some of my 7-7-7-20 timing. I bought my 4Gb for 150$, the cheapest 3*2 Gbs ones that are at 1.5V are 1333 too and they cost like 250$. I don't see the point in going for 2 more GB for 100$ more. Plus I feel 4Gbs is plenty . Better Cooler, possible 2nd HD for raid and then another 4850 are on my future upgrade list.

First of all, you have a i7 920 not a i7 965. You don't need 1600DDR3 ram.

Stick with this 1.5v 1333DDR3 ram:

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231223

or

CORSAIR XMS3 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145220

If you don't feel like spending an extra $100 then go with 3 sticks of 1gb for a total of 3gigs...

G.SKILL 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231222

its not just the total size of the ram its the fact that while the ram is ddr3 compatible unless you are using 3 sticks you are only using 2 channels instead of 3. essentially your comp is using your high priced ddr3 ram as ddr2-because it doesnt have the third stick to utilize the third channel-and at 7-7-7-20 timing you would see a great difference in speed running the third stick.

Damn , these rams are non refundable. I should track down another 2 GB patriot stick with same spec.

Played Crysis again , 1680 x 1050 , no anti aliasing, all settings high except shadows set to medium , and I got 22 to 30 fps. Temps stayed below 58 Cs entire time.

You Guys have any comments or suggestions regarding temperature.

Update on the temps, I reinstalled the intel fan again, and this time when I ran prime 95 again..after 5 mins two of the cores we at 80 Cs , others we at 76 C and 71 Cs. It says CPUTIN 72 C, SYSTIN 40C and GPU 45C.

Can wait until my real cooler gets here.

triple channel adds very little real world performance

I finished installing my new heatsink Noctua-nh-u12p-se1366. So here are my temps

idle 35 Cs and with prime 95 in full blast its only 55 Cs. I can't believe its working os well. Intels's cooler is a crap. Next stop 4 GHz

Awesome... thanks for the updates!

I'll soon be on the Core i7/ P6T bandwagon (waiting until this weekend to order). Please continue to post any progress/updates.

Thanks again.

Hey,

Sorry for the huge gap since my last post..but I was having a ball playing Gears of war and Mass effect, those games are awesome.

Anyways I was able to OC my system to 3.1GHz and stable. The temps are at 62C with 8threads of prime95 running, so I decided to pause here and not OC again for a burn in period. Anyways here are some bench marks.

Here is my config again

Corei7 920 2.66GHz , baby core i7
Asus P6T Deluxe , the basic one
Asus 4850
Patriot 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 , 1.7V 7-7-7-20

I compared my system to Bit-tech.nets build
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/11/06/overclocking-intel-core-i7-920/4
same MB and CPU, Oced to 4 GHz, only RAM is different, I don't know there GPU
RAM: 6GB triple channel Corsair Dominator 2 kit that's rated to 1,600MHz with 8-8-8-24-2T

and Guru3d's build
http://www.guru3d.com/article/asus-p6t-deluxe-review-x58-motherboard/7
same MB and CPU , no OC, only different RAM, I don't know there GPU
Ram : 6 GB PC3 16000 - Platinum Edition 9:9:9

You can checkout my results here

As you can see, Sisoft indicates my memory is not great, I am taking your advice and buying a 6Gb GSkill 1333.

I like to hear your thoughts, and how your system did for same tests.

i also bought corei7
its with gigabyte ex58 extreme
with ddr3 gskill 2gbX2(4gb)
gts 250 geforce
can any one tell me how will it be
