Ok so I began building it... Everything has gone along fine so far. Took a while to figure everything out and I still have a few questions, but I was really sad when I actually turned it on... This is what happened: I turned on the Power Supply and 2 lights on the mobo lit up. Pressed the Reset CMOS on the Mobo, pressed the Green Power button and all the lights turned on for maybe half a second and then it completely shut off. Why the hell did this happen? I know I connected everything, although there are a couple extra wires from my PSU still dangling in there... The only things I may have not connected properly were the HD and DVD/CD drive, I put those in like SATA 6 and 7 or something and there are 2 open SATA 4 and 5 ports but that has nothing to do with it turning off instantly... And I didn't know the CPU Cooler had like that paste thing on it, and smudged a liiiiittle bit of it off. There were like 3 lines of this paste going from top to bottom, I took off almost half of the 2nd line (the middle)

Please let me know why the hell it's doing this...

Alright I will do that. I'll buy some paste tomorrow and get that done. What do you mean by unplug the PSU? Take out all the cords that go from PSU to the mobo?? Or just the one that goes from electrical outlet to the psu?

Is that the likely solution or can this be something far worse? I mean obviously no one knows exactly the reason for it but can the reason the computer turning off instantly fans not even turning on be just because of a little smeared thermal paste?

I doubt the problem is the smeared thermal paste. The problem could be caused by an improperly seated CPU cooler, though. It could also be a short, forgetting to plug in the 8-pin CPU power connector near the CPU socket, bad RAM, forgetting to plug in all the power connectors on the GPU, bad PSU, etc... Have you tried booting with just one stick of RAM installed?

Ok I will try to put the cooler back in again... I plugged everything in. I hope it's not bad ram or psu.... But that would be last I will try everything before I do that. I haven't tried booting with 1 stick... I guess I will try that.

So would this be the right way to go about things right now?
1. try each stick of ram alone to see if there is 1 that works
2. seat cpu cooler again
3. apply new thermal paste
4. give it to best buy so they can try new psu or ram etc?

Thanks... I can't believe I finally decide to get a comp, spend all day building it only to have it not turned on and have noo idea why..

Are you absolutely 100% sure that the 8-pin CPU power connector is plugged in? It's hidden by a heatsink near the CPU on that board. Look at the picture looking down on the board. The CPU power connector is underneath the CPU socket in the picture. You can barely see it under the heatsink that says EVGA on it.

You also need to make sure both 6-pin connectors are plugged in to the GPU.

The CPU cooler needs to be reseated regardless, so I'd do that first. Actually, I wouldn't even try to turn it on again until I reseated it.

Yes I just checked and everything is plugged in. I will try the RAM issue next. Am I supposed to place the ram into the green or black slots by the way? The instructions seem to say green, but it's not working anyways so =/

Put the RAM in the green slots. Make sure that you plugged in the 8-pin connector into your motherboard. Also make sure that your 20+4 pin is properly inserted all the way. If you have an additional 4-pin molex connector on the board to supply extra power to the PCI-E slots be sure to plug that in as well.

Yeah everything is plugged in properly as far as I can tell man... The only thing I haven't tried so far is actually replacing the parts (which I can't do) , re-seating the Heatsink with new thermal paste (Will do it tomorrow when stores open so I can go buy some) and unplug everything to see if I missed a wire haha. But I really think I didn't... I'm just hoping that its the thermal paste problem... but like when I took off the heatsink there was a decent amount of paste on both the top of the processor and the bottom of the heatsink.. would it be worth it just trying to re-seat it again? I don't know how I can NOT seat it properly though.. I mean you just put it in put the little clamps down and thats it...

Worst case scenario is to remove everything from the case and put the mobo onto a non-conductive surface (cardboard is good) and plug in just the essentials: CPU, CPU HSF, 1 memory stick, GPU, HD and PSU w/essential plug ins. This will eliminate any shorts that might be present under/on the mobo.

Alright well tomorrow I will go get the thermal paste and do all that stuff, and hopefully it will work.. If not I guess I will just post back here. Thanks for the help guys.

As I said, the OP needs to fix the CPU cooler FIRST.

He said half of the middle strip was gone, smeared away. I'll bet it's loaded with foreign particles. He absolutely should not test anything until he knows that the CPU is properly cooled.
