Just got my new ssd!

Hi guys, I recently bought an ssd and it just arrived today. Currently in my pc I have just a standard 1tb hdd. From what I understand the best way to install my ssd and get it up and running is to disconnect my hdd, connect my ssd, download windows from in my case a usb drive, and then let windows do its thing. Is that correct? Also I don't really want to wipe all of my data off of the hdd, but everywhere I look online says I am going to have to. Is there a way for me to install windows onto my ssd and then plug in my hdd and just delete the OS from it?

Windows partition in HDD will become useless after SSD becomes the boot drive (and new Windows installation location)
Back up your important files from old C partition in HDD then wipe it clean (or merge it to the next partition(s) in HDD)

Could you explain how to do that for me? I got the first part, but you lost me at old C partition.

Leaving the hdd disconnected while you install windows on the ssd is correct.
If you do not, windows places a hidden recovery partition on the second drive making it all but impossible to ever run without it.

After the install, you should be able to reconnect the hard drive and access you data folders.

Apps that use the registry will need to be reinstalled.
You can just delete the old windows folders on the hard drive.
