yeah so i swapped my 2500k + cash for a 2600 non k and an h55 liquid cooler. i havent gone into the bios but hardware monitor is telling me that it is at 4016mhz during games and it reaches 4.3ghz as the highest. does anyone know how this can be? the guy i got it off said he could only get it to 3.9ghz but without trying (literally) im at 4ghz??

That doesn't make sense and it sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Cpu speed = bclk x multiplier. Bclk stands for baseclock and is stock 100mhz. So 38x100=3800mhz. Oc on non k is really simple. They are limited to oc 4 multipliers higher. You can try to set a higher multi but it won't. K cpus can go higher multi, that's the only difference. The set multi is the highest turbo speed so the stock multi is 38. He should have set multi to 42 (the max for that cpu) so would have known it would have gone to 4.2ghz.

I should mention it's not recommended to change bclk for sb because it's also connected to sata, pcie, usb, etc., so can cause corrupted files. I figured you had asus as they are known to auto oc but you may want...
Some mobos auto oc. What someone else did makes no difference as the settings are dependent on the mobo. Without changing bclk it could go to 4.2; 3.9 on all cores which is what he was probably talking about. But the auto oc changed the bclk, I bet you are somewhere around 39 x 103=4017 which makes the max turbo to 4.3.

right ok. i dont know what the multiplier means but the number 39 rings a bell. the guy told me he had the core speed locked at 3.9 by making the boost clock the base clock and getting it 100mhz higher. he was surprised when i told him it was running at 4-4.3ghz and told me he thought only the K cpus had that kind of one click overclocking. my motherboard is a asus P8P67m-pro

I figured you had asus as they are known to auto oc but you may want to do it manually. Auto oc is probably putting more voltage than you really need. Asus mobos also have a turbo workaround which you can actually get the max turbo speed on all cores instead of just one if you manually change bclk. So you can run at 4.3ghz on all cores instead of 4ghz if you choose to stay at 103 bclk. The first time I saw this was on z68 although asus did state it was also on p67.
