Remember the 3 page post?

I installed the Zalman CNPS6000-CU and to my surprise, I got a temperature reading of 60C - 5C higher than my Akasa785. ah heck. Have I done somethong wrong?

It is quiet, but now, although it is a lot quieter, I can hear the PSU fan, which will be replaced soon.

Man! I thought my WDSE was quiet but now I can actually hear it - might get some silencing kit for it.

I'm looking forward to buying Doom3 and probably a new graphics card since my GF3Ti200 might not be able to run it - Any recommendations on a good FANLESS graphics card.

Finally, like I said, my idle temp is 60C in silent mode. Is it safe to play games? I'm haven't played a game since I installed the Zalman!

Thanks!

yes, kinda high, but fine, just run a game or two, and check your temps with a probe. I would definately stay below 70c, so you might have to crank up the fan

Instead of Rdram, why not just merge 4 Sdram channels...

I just installed the Zalman 3100+ and my Duron 1.3 runs at 47 C in silent mode at idle w/ no case fan and an older PS that has only one fan.

What CPU do you have and what is the case and/or room temperature?

My system's cool enough in silent, how much cooler does your's run in normal mode?

I'll plan on replacing my PS too, because it's now the noise maker. Are you planning on just replacing the PS fan, or the entire PSU?

I have an AMD1700+.
Case temp is about 36C.

I'm not interested in Normal mode since it causes nearly as much noise as my old Akasa 785. I hope to convert my PC into one that's very, very quiet so that I can listen to mp3s, watch dvds and more inportantly - concentrate when I'm working on it/studing

Replacing the fan will save you a lot of money, but make sure that your replacement doesn't cause your PSU to overheat - I don't know how - I 'm just gonna try it.

Hmmm, seems inconvenient if I have to open the case to adjust the speed every time I play a game.

One thing though, I have the Fanmate one. What's the difference between, I think, the 3 versions of the Fanmate Controller.

Are there 3pin wire extensions out there that I can buy, so that I can keep the Fanmate outside of the case?

Thanks!

3 pin adaptors/extensions (or make your own) here:

Hmmm, my 1.3 Duron has temp of 47C in silent mode with the case/board reading 35C. The XP1700 should have similar thermal performance to a 1.3 Duron (the T-bred XP1700 actually puts out less watts, if I remember correctly, than the 1.3 Duron). I am using the Z3100+ a slightly different model, but I wonder if the HS is not making good contact with the chip?

Good point. i'm using a Cool Shim to prevent my heatsink crushing the cpu core. Do you think I should risk installing the Zalman without a shim?

Do you use a thermal paste?

Still can't believe it's 60C. My XP1700+ has the Palomino core or something like that. Are you sure it gives out they same heat as your Duron?

good luck getting a FANLESS graphics card that runs Doom 3
you may be asking a bit much =/
you can't have your silence and Doom 3 too, though i don't think graphics card fans are loud in the first place

Well maybe I should be more concerned about crushing the core, but I don't use a shim, just resting on the little felt pads, I used the thermal paste provided with the Zalman package. First I cleaned the residue from the prior heat sink off the CPU with IPA (rubbing alcohol) and "Q-tips" to start with a clean surface, then applied the thermal paste. I would tend to think that the force exerted by the spring clip is greater than the weight of the HS, but have no real data, so I wasn't concerened with crushing the CPU...
Re the XP1700, the palamino core is hotter than the t-bred, and a 1700 palamino probably puts out more heat than the Duron, but I don't think your temps should be that high with the case temperature decsribed.

I do believe there is a zalman kit for the Radeon 9700 series... uses heatpipes and multiple heatsinks. Looks heavey as all hell
