single core CPU mulitask fine... you don't need a dual core. I would take one for sure
but a 3700+ athlon will run @ 2500 easy if you like. For 230 bucks you cant go wrong and in a year sell it for 100 buck and get a 4000X2 for a nice price, if I had the cash I would go for it. Right now a 7800gt or something like it will help your gaming performance more dollar for dollar then a dual core.

"for me i dont really care about my 3Dmark score neither do i care whether i have more than 60FPS all the time in my games

i need dual core cos i like to run many things at once and i will fully utilise the 2nd processor with PS, rendering and fast alternate-tabbing (i.e. watching porn while rendering a divx porn video and suddenly the boss walks past)"

this will be the main reason why people buy dual cores

jokes aside,

i have put off CPU upgrade for a loooong lOOOooNg time just for the dual core hence i'll be getting one =]

You're saying what? You can multitask aim with firefox?
A single core processor is cheaper than a dual core processor, however if you have the extra money a dual core processor will serve you better.

Not everyone games and does nothing else though...many people run intensive applications simultaneously, therefore it is better for them to get dual-core.

I certainly like your thinking, for gamers especially.
If you are looking @ spending over $1200 just for the tower (without software as well), think about dual core.
If you have other uses for your money, learn to use taskmanager for multitasking.
If you have an HT Intel chip, you need taskmanager for not multitasking.
For example, if you are trying to encode a movie (or any other cpu intensive task)in a hurry, you want to set everything else to minimal usage, otherwise, it will have way too much access to cpu.

Well I think its pretty dumb myself to not go dual core, unless your budget will just not allow.

I suspect heavily that the 7800GT is held back by most of todays even upper end CPUs. My friend had an x2 3800+ in his rig with the 7800GT and 2GB of gigaRAM mach1000 DDR500.

He increased his FPS and overall gaming "smoothness" buy what he estimates around 15-20% from an overclock on his processor of 500mhz. Earned him almost 1000 extra 3D Marks in 3DMark06

Win Vista will take advantage of two cores, some games do and Im betting most if not all newer ones will be able to. Intensive apps like audio and video editing/rendering make good useage of dual core.

My instance is that say I need to transcode my entire Family Guy DVD collection into divx. Do i A) sit there and watch them transcode B) Leave because its as much fun as waiting for a cd to burn at 4x or C) Play some COD2 or BF2 or whatever the hell I want.. rip some music off a CD to listen to or watch some movies on the PC.
