K7S5A - newbie needs help

Sorry, if this seems like a dumb post, but before reading this NG, I didn't
even know that upgrading the bios would allow you to use a faster processor!
Any help would be grately appreciated.

I have a K7S5A board, with an 850mhz Duron.
The instruction book says that it can be upgraded to a 1.4mhz Duron, but am
I right in thinking that this can be increased if the bios is updated?
How can I find out what version of the bios I have?
Where can I get a new version from?
What is the max processor I can drop in?
Am I likely to fry my PC?

I dropped a Duron 1600 into my k7s5a w/o problem (costs $42 at
Newegg.com). However, in order to enable SSE instructions, I had to
flash the BIOS, I used the Honeyx BIOS, details of which are available
here:

I believe I used the BIOS for the 1.x/3.x/Pro board. My board is a
ver 1.x (1.3 or 1.4, can't recall).

I would think the highest clocked Duron could be used, perhaps a Duron
1800; is that the fastest one available now?.

Your MB might be able to handle the upgraded processor without any bios
upgrade. You should try this first before attempting a flash of your
bios, as a failure in a flash can be serious.

If you don't flash the BIOS before installing the new cpu, it may not
recognize it properly (in model only).
You should be able to use up to an Athlon XP 2600 (266mhz only).
If you do decide to flash, I would recommend the HoneyX BIOS.
Remember, if you buy a 266MHz (FSB of 133MHz) cpu, you ram should also be at
least PC2100 or SDram PC-133.
The instruction book was written before the advent of the faster Athlon
cpu's.
The BIOS usually comes up on the first screen during boot-up.

i have had an amd1800xp which i beleive was athlon with 2100ddr,running on
this board,with no probs.

With CPU prices so cheap now, get an XP and scrap the Duron.

Currently the 1.x versions will handle up to AMD XP 2600.

Flash it and then drop in the new cpu, double check your RAM settings (133)
and boot it up.

To find out model #'s and some other goodies get this.
