So i'm building a PC. I've been set on an i5-7600k, but the i5-8600k was just released. I will mostly be doing gaming on it, but some school work will be done also. Should i spend the extra $60 and get the Coffee Lake? Also if I buy a Coffee Lake, will I be able to use a z270 MOBO with a bios update? I've got 2 builds, one Kaby and one Coffee, that i will link. The total difference in price is $100, but that's with a z370 MOBO. If i can use a z270 then i can shave some of that off. Thanks in advance :)

Also the MSI z270 m5 is on sale for $120 so if i could use that with coffee lake (if its even worth it) it would help.

It's been stated prior here on the site, that the new processor would need a new chipset, i.e the Z370 chipset. If you must go for the Z270 platform then you should be looking at the Kabylake processor part.

In short, coffeelake+Z370 chipset board.

Mind sharing the state of your parts list? It'd also be a good idea to know what you're working with at the moment.

If you're asking what i've already bought, then nothing but the cpu cooler lol.

Ok. What about the performance aspect. Is the extra $60 worth it for mostly gaming. Well i guess the extra $100 including the mobo.

There will be a performance increase with the i5 8600K in SOME games, however, not all. In the games that can use more than four cores the difference will be between 10% to 50% with a GTX 1080 Ti, however, with a lesser video card the % benefit will decrease rapidly as the screen resolution increases and as the power of the video card decreases, for example a GTX 1070 and GTX 1060.

So, if you are going to purchase a mid level video card and use a 1080p or 1440p monitor, you will see no performance increase for games that use less than 6 cores to a slight increase for games that can use 6 cores.
