Does anyone else have a problem with Vista when you do a search it locks up? Will upgrading to Window 7 fix that problem?

I haven't had search freeze my system up on either Vista or 7....

I haven't had a problem with searches in Windows 7. (I skipped Vista.) Upgrading to Windows 7 would fix the problem. However, reinstalling Vista using the recovery disks/partition would almost certainly fix it as well. That would be the cheaper option. If you have the money, though, Win7 is a good way to improve your system's speed and overall usability, IMO.
