Hello all,
I have recently built a gaming desktop, and every time I use it, 10 minutes in I get a Blue Screen of Death saying "DRIVER IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". After poking around the internet, this seams to have something to do with invalid drivers. What troubleshooting steps should I take to solve this? How do I get these missing drivers? I cannot seem to find any driver update tool on the internet that does not require you to register or pay a monthly fee, so are there any free driver update tools? Thank you!

Update:

I ran memtest x86, 16 passes 0 fails, so that is ruled out.

I ran CHKDSK, 0 bad files, so it's not the hard drive either.

Not the hard drive or the RAM...
So does that mean I have bad drivers? What else could be the issue?

Bad drivers or an overheating GPU.

Does this only occur when playing games?

On-line games?

Does removing the side casing from your computer increase the length of time before the problem shows up?

What kit do you have? I'm usually quite good at tracking drivers down, if that is the issue.

Are you over-clocking? Go to defaults and see if that helps.

I have found that sometimes Windows Updates can install software which conflicts with existing hardware. Try uninstalling some recent updates.

Try Driver Easy. I think the basic download is free.

If you built a desktop and the drivers are bad, I'm assuming you used the drivers that were on the CD that came with the motherboard?

Thank you for responding,

I found driver booster, and it works well. I believe drivers were the issue, as RAM wasn't and the hard drive wasn't. I don't have my GPU just yet, it should come tomorrow (according to newegg), so that probably is not that problem.

UPDATE:
After running Driver Booster, I had about 20 bad drivers. Downloaded and installed them, and then rebooted my rig. It has been running for a smooth 2 hours with no crashes, but stay in touch. I will most likely need help installing drivers for my GPU (which is the PowerColor Radeon HD 7870 MYST).

And another question,
When installing some things, such as Terraria's first time setup on steam, I get this error message:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personal for assistance.

How do I fix this? I want to play Terraria 🙁

LOL. No, probably not.

On the other thing, have you got you .NET Framework 4 up to date.

Post 6 of this thread might be relevant and of some value to you:

Perhaps trying to get it to work is supposed to be part of the adventure.

Solution

Perhaps it was.

I will try that later, I am quite busy today.

My graphics card should also be coming later, so I'll post any problems I have here.

Just installed my graphics card. I have never used a discrete graphics card before, and man, was I missing out.

Anywho,
With the above fix, everything seems to be running smooth.
One problem, though.

When I download and install updates, about 50 out of 130 fail. I tried again, but I cannot seem to install these 50 updates. Any ideas?

BTW most of these are optional updates, if that matters...
