Got an SSD for my PC and installed windows 10 on it. Tried to access files and programs, while booted on windows 10 SSD, on windows 8 HDD but required permission to access. When "acquire access" was clicked it took more than 5 minutes and nothing happened. Found a way to change setting from windows 10 on the HDD to be able to access it but had a warning that permissions would be changed to the point you cant boot from it again. I want the windows 8 to remain bootable incase some of the content or programs are inaccessible on windows 10 due to my job. Is there a way to boot into windows 8 on the HDD, change the security settings, and make it to where i can access the HDD while booted on windows 10 SSD? (but still let the HDD be bootable)

Solution
Kitty... has pretty much provided the solution.

1. Presumably the Win 8 (I hope you mean Win 8.1; Win 8 is a dog) installed on the HDD boots to that OS and properly functions when that drive is the ONLY drive installed.

2. Presumably the Win 10 installed on the SSD boots to that OS and properly functions when that drive is the ONLY drive installed.

NOW ASSUMING THAT BOTH 1. & 2. CONDITIONS ARE MET...

When both drives are installed in the PC and you power-on the machine in most cases you should be able to access the boot menu by pressing the appropriate F key. Different motherboards use different F keys to access the boot menu upon bootup, so check your motherboard's user manual if you don't know it.

The boot menu will list the...

Thanks for the tip! Im able to boot on to the SSD with windows 10, but the problem is I cant access the files on the old HDD due to permissions and dont know how to unlock it wile keeping it a bootable drive as well

The boot menu will list the installed drives so it's just a matter of selecting the drive containing the OS you want to boot to.

If you're unable to access the boot menu, you can access the BIOS (as Kitty... suggests) and select the drive containing the OS that you want to boot to.

Solution

So in other words, I should be able to go into the bios, set the SSD as the main bootable drive, and should be able to access the HDD with no permission problems? if this is the case, i have already set the SSD that way and booted straight to W10 and then tried to access the HDD with no luck.

Also, yes, I am able to boot into both OS's them both being installed on the same computer.

Again thank you all for the help.

No, that's not what I mean. You should still be able to access the HDD through the SSD, just not being able to boot on it. The only way to boot onto a storage device is to go onto the BIOS and change the boot drive.
