Currently i have to install windows 10 to a old vista machine that has some pretty important stuff on it but it has 1 partition. If i do install 10 on it im pretty sure it's gonna get wiped or im wrong. I was thinking of making a second partition through windows and move all the stuff to it and then install 10 on the partition with only windows ? Would i be able to keep my files on that second partition? Im thinking of trying to make it on a VM in a bit.

Solution
If you install windows 10 in a different partition, then nothing happens to vista.
You get dual boot system and can boot either into vista or windows 10.

Shrink existing partition, create new one and install windows 10 in it.

BTW it is possible to upgrade:
vista -> windows 7,
windows 7 -> windows 10.
You keep all installed software this way. But backup should be made before. If upgrade fails for some reason, then you're screwed.

I have a 970ish GB partition only and there are like 400+ gb free. So you mean making a new one and just installing it on that new one and not the vista partition ?
