Keeps cycling between Network Cable Unplugged and Enabled

Hey guys
I do not know what is happening but my LAN connection keeps cycling between "Enabled" and "Network Cable Unplugged". It cycles every 2-3 seconds. (This is happening at work)
I have been experiencing this problem for a while but until now it has not been problematic as I have had wireless all the time to solve my problem.
Now, that I do not have wireless, this is dramatic as I cannot acces the network. This problem is however solved when I am connected to the network through a switch in a bigger office.
Does someone have an idea on how to solve this? I am running Windows 7.

Bad NIC or bad network cable.

Well, I have tried different cables and it still does not work.
Also, if the NIC is broken why would it work in other environements? :-(

I am assuming that you are using a laptop, hence the moving around and connecting to a bigger office.

Try another switch and see if it works. If it does, then there was a faulty switch you were connecting to or the patch in the wall is faulty.

If not, try changing the drivers of your NIC. Sometimes the newest isn't always the greatest.

Keep us informed of what you tried and if there was any change.

I have tried all your suggestions.
Tried different switches, it always work.
When I connect directly to an outlet in the wall, it never works. If I do it with another laptop it works.
Tried many different cables that work with the switch, but not when directly connected...

Of course the easy solution is to buy a switch and use it in my new office but this only solves the problem partially. Whenever I travel I'll have to carry the switch with me otherwise I won't have connection :-(

Any suggestion?

Then one would have to assume it is the laptop which is at fault. How old is the laptop? is it under manufacturers warranty or any extended warranty or service plan? can you get it inspected/serviced?

Sounds like a dodgey NIC on the laptop but obviously they are integrated as part of the motherboard on laptops therefore if you are paying for a repair, it would be the cost of a new motherboard and also the labour. If the laptop is more than about 18-24months old then ditch it and buy new.

The cost of the repair would be close to the price of a new laptop, which would work out an upgrade.

Not worth getting repaired to be honest. You could spend some money on getting it inspected by an engineer to confirm that it is the NIC that is at fault, and therefore requires a new motherboard. Best case scenario he might identify that the connector is simply loose and re-solder the joins or something like that, but he will still charge you the inspection fee and labour no doubt.

So, the problem is partially solved.
Net is 10/100Mbps and the network switch is configured as Auto-negotitation.

Do not know why but fixing the speed to of my board to 10Mbps it is able to connect to the network.
If I try auto-negotiation or fixing 100Mbps it does not.

Will investigate further why this does not work but for now I will stick to the 10Mbps and be able to use the printers and access local storage
