I've had an issue on and off where my computer will just restart out of nowhere and when I check out the Event Viewer I see a "Critical" Kernel-Power Event ID 41 Task 63 error. This would happen totally randomly and I could never reproduce it - Until today.

I discovered that this seems to happen every other time I playblast an animation in Maya with viewport 2.0 (basically it happens when playing back very hi-res animations with all the settings maxed out).

I've monitored my temps and they are all hovering around 30-50C which seems normal. I would say this is an issue with my PSU but if so, why would it happen when doing graphically intense processing? Maybe it's an issue with my graphics card? Any ideas?

COMPUTER:
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X79
CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor
GPU: Quadro 4000 2GB Video Card
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
OS: Windows 7 64bit

Do you mean if my computer turned off, and restarted automatically (without pressing the on/off button), that means it's probably the PSU at fault here?

A problem with the PSU seems the most logical answer, but why wouldn't the erro happen more consistently? And why does the shutdown happen everytime I playblast a heavy scene in Maya? Does the PSU draw more power based on CPU/GPU activity? I thought it was more or less drawing power consistently but I could be totally wrong on that.

In any case, is there a way to test if my PSU's screwy without swapping it out for a new one? Should I just get a power supply tester and dry to see if it comes up with any issues? Sorry for the thousand questions I'm just trying to find the best way to proceed...

Thanks!

I just wanted to follow up with some more information that I've found on this. In the event viewer, I've determined that all my Kernel-Power errors are producing a "BugcheckCode" of 278 which is 116 hex. After looking this up a bit this is said to be a problem related to the video driver or hardware which makes sense because it's happening as I playblast something (which is very visually intensive). As a result, I've installed the latest certified driver for my graphics card for Maya, and tried playblasting my scene again and I got the same reboot with the same Kernel error message.

I ran a memtest and it produced no errors but I may have stopped it before it was totally finished. I'll run it again overnight. Not sure what's going on still -_-

EDIT: I'm excited to report that I am able to reproduce this kernel power error while undergoing a GPU Stress test (using FurMark). Now all I have to determine is what's causing it... Is it a power issue or my GPU failing... Looking into it now but if you have any ideas lemme know!

DOUBLE EDIT: Ok my latest hypothesis is this is a cooling issue. I noticed that when my computer crashed using FurMark, I was experiencing GPU temperatures of 105C! I then noticed that my GPU idles at around 85C which seems pretty high. I might need to install some new fans and clean out the dust of my machine.
