Yesterday while playing MGSV, about 35 minutes into gameplay, my computer just randomly shut off and rebooted. Once back on, it was as if nothing happened. No messages or notifications of any kind of unusual activity. I looked into the Windows Event log and it showed that a "Critical Error: Kernel-Power #41" or something along those lines had occurred. This has never happened on my computer before and it had only happened that one time.

There are a couple reasons why "I think" it may have occurred. One, I installed Windows 10 when it was released and I experienced a lot of bugs and programs not working after installation. Doing a sfc /scannow in CMD also reported multiple corrupt registry files that Windows was not capable of repairing. This was the first time gaming since my upgrade, and when I was still on Windows 7, I never had issues while playing graphic intensive games. Two, while I was playing, it was storming outside. A lot of thunder and lightning. Maybe a lightning strike caused my surge protectors to react? I don't know if that is in fact a possibility, just a guess.

Since this event, I decided to start fresh. Formatted all my drives, I did a clean install of Windows 7, and updated all my drivers to their latest versions. Registry shows all clear too. Haven't tried the game again, but so far, no issues. What do you guys think this could have been? Should I worry? Read around and some stated that a PSU could cause that error. But my Seasonic 860W is still almost brand new and has never acted up previously. Here are my specs..

Intel Core i7-4790K Quad-Core @ 4.0GHz
MSI Z97-Gaming 9 AC Motherboard
MSI GTX 980 4GB
Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD x2
Western Digital 1TB HDD
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 15000)
Seasonic Platinum Rated 860W PSU

Thank you for reading and any help would be much appreciated!

It is likely that it was a power issue. Loose cable, loose plug, power sag (brown out), etc... Was there a failure of your PSU? Maybe, maybe not. Sorry that I don't have a better answer, but code 41 Kernel-Power only means the system lost power. I have seen driver glitches which can cause this issue. Without additional information, there really isn't any way to know.

Without repeats, I wouldn't be too concerned.
