"KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (partmgr.sys)" on newly built rig

Hello everyone.

My system:

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 Gaming 1
CPU: Intel i5 4690k
MoBo: Asus Z97 AR
RAM: Kingston HyperX 1866MHz 2x4GB
PSU: Zalman ZM500-LE (going to upgrade to a 750W PSU soon)

I built a custom pc last week and I keep getting BSOD when playing games. The errors first only appeared as "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR", but later on I saw the "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" error. The errors occur while playing games (demanding games such as Shadow of Mordor and Crysis 3). Framerates are butter smooth and the GPU and CPU temperatures seem normal, however, randomly I see 1-3 sec freezes every few minutes. After the freeze the game returns to running perfectly again, if not I get the blue screen. Sometimes the freezing lasts upto 10-15 seconds during which the pc is not responding to any commands and ends up crashing 90% of the time.

Furthermore, after the time this error occurred, the boot priority got messed up and I can't find my SSD in the boot priority list, but I can see it in the "boot options" menu and clicking on it instantly boots from the SSD. So, I have to go to the bios boot options and select my SSD every time the PC restarts in order to launch Windows. After searching for solutions what I've tried so far:

- ran CHKDSK - no error found
- ran memtest86 for one hour (4 cycles I think) - no error found
- installed games on a different HDD and ran them from there to make sure the problem was not with the SSD - issues not resolved
- Removed one of the two RAM sticks to try each of them out alone. Interestingly using a single ram I get significantly less frequent BSODs, but still do with each of them. This makes me think the issue might be with the MoBo?

Unfortunately I'm still a newbie at this point and am trying to learn by following suggestions mentioned in similar topics. For example, I do not know how to locate the dump files which I wanted to post here. I found 3 DMP files located in c:/Windows/minidump from only the past two days but got the access denied error when trying to open with wordpad. After copying and pasting somewhere else, I managed to open them but they were unreadable (symbols and spaces).

Today I saw the error again but this time it was "KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR partmgr.sys". I do not remember seeing partmgr.sys before. I could not find the exact same error someone else had when I searched google. After restarting and going in to bios options to boot from my SSD, this time it was not in the list! After restarting the PC it was there and managed to boot from it.

The crashes and split second freezes only occur while playing games. I kept the PC running overnight while just playing some music files and not a single crash.

I'm very sorry for the messy post. I am trying to include everything with detail as I lack knowledge in the tech. It looks like there might be an issue with the SSD but did the above tests that ruled it out. So my only guess is the MoBo at this point. Someone suggested the 500W PSU might be the problem. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

A 500W PSU is like poison for your system. If I remember correctly most of Nvidia's GPUs need a MINIMUM of 500W (you got a 970!). On top of that you have a K Intel CPU. Even if the system doesn't draw 500W, just being close to that wattage causes voltage instability.
The crashes you experience under load (Crysis, Shadow of Mordor) but not when playing music prove your PSU not worthy. Try logging your voltages with AIDA or the like, though I am 99% sure it's your PSU.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, the minimum requirement for a 970 system is 500W. The main features of the new maxwell cards is that it draws significantly less power than the previous high end cards. At full load it draws 145W. I know that 500W is not ideal and will be buying a new PSU in a couple months (unless this is really a big problem, then I'll borrow money to buy one asap). I was under the impression that (after reading several posts - can find links if you'd like) unless I overclock and add a lot of hardware, a 500W would be OK temporarily. The K CPU is not overclocked, and neither is anything else (will do the overclockings when I get a proper 750W PSU, then SLI in the future). I have only kb/mouse, 1 SSD, 1 HDD connected to reduce the needed wattage.

Can you please tell me how to use AIDA?

Latest AIDA trail version censors voltages. Use this instead. Once installed go to tools -> start recording. Note that it won't save logs if it crashes (or if the whole system crashes). Stress your system until you notice freezes, stop recording (tools-> stop recording) and post the voltages screenshot.

OK. Should I start the recording when the freezes in game start or ...? The freezes are just extremely random so might have to wait up to an hour or two... so random that things are flawless when there are lots of objects and particles being rendered and freezes come when there is no action in a plain field.

Start before the freezes. Start logging voltages under load for a short time. If the voltages are off by 5% (example on the 5V rail you should see a voltage between 4.75 and 5.25) then something is definitely wrong with the PSU. If everything is okay the you have no choice but to wait for the crashes.

Values seem normal. Didn't have a crash yet. just a couple split second freezes where the values did not change. I really doubt its the psu, but will keep testing and post results after a crash.
