Shouldn't this be under one of those "Another Stoopid Noob Question"
threads?

Nobody here's gonna give out a key my friend.

No it should not be newb, the definition is:

The informal term newbie (n00b or noob in leetspeak is not the same)
means a newcomer to a particular corner of cyberspace, such as a game,
newsgroup, or the World Wide Web itself or to an operating system. It
can be both a disparaging and friendly term; always referring to a
neophyte. The word itself is likely a corruption of new boy, the
equivalent figure in real life—usually observed as a new arrival in a
school and who is, therefore, vulnerable to bullying of various kinds.
On Google's Usenet archive, the word first appears in 1988.

The word "newbie" is older than that, though. I remember first
encountering it in August of 1995, in Fujitsu's experimental
graphical-community service "WorldsAway". I'm relatively sure that it's
been around before that, too.

I first heard the word in 1980 when I first joined the army.

Well, yes... 1988 came a bit before 1995.

At least here in the USofA, things might be different in Germany...
