I just got an msi gaming carbon pro z370 and everything thurns on, and posts, but for some reason only ONE usb port works on the motherboard. The one right next to the usb type c. So I can't install windows because I need at least two working ports, one for the keyboard and one for the flash drive as the boot device. Any ideas of what I can do to get the other usb ports to work? Is it just a bad motherboard?

Solution
To fix your issue, you can use a PS/2 KB in the PS/2 port while leaving the working USB port for your Win installation. But since you have a replacement on the way, there's not much point to go with this fix. But next time, do breadboard your MoBo before putting it into the case.
did you properly attach both the 24pin and 6pin power cables to your motherboard?
the motherboard may not be getting enough power. lets hope its not defective for your case
WARNING please dont forget to shutdown your system when you are gonna touch the hardware

oh well. i would usually check the cpu socket pins again in the mount. if thats the case. if there is no pins bent, then definitely the board is faulty.
is the mobo led green?

dont you have like a usb 3.0 hub? it will exapnd your one sole working port there into 3 or more with that.

The pins are all fine, I already checked, and my mobo is not throwing any error codes out. Everything appears as if it should be working perfectly fine. I mean is there anything I couldve done wrong to make the usb ports directly on the motherboard not work? I was thinking about taking the mobo out of the case and putting it on carbdoard and trying it from there but I am pretty certain that the mobo isn't touching the case or anything. I don't know what to try anymore

If I did this how would I ever use a usb keyboard and mouse in the future? I would still want those usb ports to work. Is it possible that once i got it running with an os the usb ports would start working?

It is possible that once you've installed MoBo drivers, USB ports are working fine.

For some reason, MSI BIOS is picky about USB KBs. I got 2x MSI MoBos: MSI Z97 GAMING 5 and MSI Z170A GAMING M5. With Z97 MoBo, i can't use the Trust GXT 280 USB KB that are used with it on normal operations. I need to take out my old PS/2 KB when i want to do any changes in the BIOS. As far as my Z170 MoBo goes, my Corsair Strafe RGB KB has a Legacy mode which is supported with MSI BIOS.

so if i just recently ordered a usb hub and use that to connect everything and get it working, theres a possibility that all of the usb ports will work after installing drivers.....? I might have pulled the trigger on getting a replacement a little too fast. But the usb ports should work out of the box if im not mistaken?

So i probably just have a bad mobo then?

If you've installed Win 10 and MoBo drivers (with USB drivers) and your USB ports still fail to operate then yes, your MoBo has a defect. Without doing those, i can't say for sure if the issue is with your MoBo or your KB/mouse that doesn't want to play nice with MSI MoBo.

Alright ill give that a shot when i get home

So good news (maybe?).. i got a usb hub and the hub has lights on it, so i went around testing every usb port and the lights still came on. So every usb port IS getting power, I just can't use a keyboard and mouse on every usb slot. Does this information help with any kind of diagnosis?

Did you check you have latest BIOS? A brand new motherboard should recognise other USB devices

MSI Motherboards have a program called Live Update 6, you can run it to confirm you have latest drivers. It should be in the utilities page of motherboard web site.

Yep bios is update. Wtf is going on. Im still having the same problem

looking at backplate, you have 2 USB 2 slots, and 5 USB 3 Gen 1 slots. Not sure which is alongside the 3.1 slot since on the picture on web site (look on details here: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z370-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-AC/Specification),, on one side of 3.1 is a Display port out and on other is HDMI. all the USB are around those slots though.

I assume the mouse/kb are cabled and not wireless? Have you tried other USB devices?

Have you tried resetting bios? Might want to check if any bent CPU Pins on motherboard - Idea found here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=264567.0
