Keyboard not being recognized at boot

I was recently working on an older PC (from 2008, fairly good specs for its advanced age) and my neighbor wanted me to get rid of all of the viruses that had culminated on it. So I said sure and I proceeded to look at it. Immediately I knew that I was of no technical ability to fully get rid of all the malware embedded in the system because it was pretty extensive. So I was just going to reinstall the OS and call it a day (ofc getting the pictures off it first). But as soon as I tried to get into the bios, after like 20 tries, I realized that the keyboard wasn't responding at all. Not knowing, I grabbed mine and tried again. No luck. So i went to every forum and tried to see if someone had a similar issue and I didn't find one. I still see the screen that shows the keys to get in the bios so fast boot isnt on. I think I need a Ps/2 keyboard, from what I understand it just simply needs no driver to operate. Does that sound like the issue? Any half way decent keyboard for like 20 bucks uk just in case I run into something that requires it again.

Thanks

I dont see why the keyboard wont work if you didnt even do anything to it yet. Try all the usb slots and you said you can press the button to get into bios? but then the keyboard doesnt workw hen your in bios?

I tried all the usb slots and like i tried to press the button to get into the bios but it never goes. So I cant get into bios in the first place. The keyboard just wont respond until windows loads.
