....but if rabies were so incurable your deity couldn't help, how could
ascending yourself save you?

Or would we simply see more frothing-at-the-mouth demigods about the
Ascension Bar?

More to the point- if you are within 500 turns of ascension, you
pretty much have to have the amulet already, and are mostly likely
on the planes-- so the chances of encountering a rabid rat are
rather small, and the chance of having any desire to eat it are
even smaller (hungry? why not snack on that tasty dragon over there-
it'll fill you up much better than a measly little rabid rat...)

Problem: in order to ascend, you have to either already be on Astral, or
go through the Plane of Water. One of the important effects of advanced
rabies is severe hydrophobia.

That's right - no using holy water (or any water-based potion),
either.

The kind of hydrophobia you get freom rabies is no phobia in the
psychological sense (just as haemophilia is no philia). You are just
unable to drink (or speak) due to a paralysed throat. So no potion
quaffing and no #chatting.
