Killer trees

Could somebody explain me what happening:

I am grey elf elementalist (playing first time since 1999 and using
save files backup cheat); found a number of 'Book of Invisibility' and
'Teleportation' (+ teleport control), so 90% of time I am invisible.
Having 'Fire Bolt' and 'Burning Hands' strength around 27-29, I decided
to have some fun with living forest. I destroyed ~ half of it before my
mana goes low, so I teleported myself to stair, go out, rested to
restore mana. Upon returning ~1 of 5 trees see me being invisible, and
with they are killing me in one or two rounds (I have 80/30 DV/PV and
~230HP)!! What happened? They have 'critical hit' every second blow!
I remember I used some fireballs here as well, but reluctant to do it
again since ground is full of items.

Bye.
Sincerely yours, Mike.

:) I do not know... Trees does not respawn or replicate -- what do you
mean by 'new ones'?

Bye.
Sincerely yours, Mike.

Trees DO respawn.

Are you sure? I did not noticed it. Number of trees is reduced
considerably after my genocide and never grow up back regardless of how
many time I spend on this level. But number of alive orcs becomes
considerably larger...

Bye.
Sincerely yours, Mike.

Trees don't like fire. If you've killed two dozens of them, new ones
are much harder. Why do they see you? ?

They never regenerate in your line of sight, only outside it. Teleport
to the other side of the forest, wait around a few turns, then go back.
There will be a lot of trees there.

And the effect you noticed is by design, especially to stop things like
you were doing - killing many trees to get lots of items. They become
stronger the more you kill.

Finally, as for them being able to see you, maybe you hit them with
Fireball, ball spells give away your location to anything hit by them.
Alternatively, if you were surrounded by trees, they could have been
simply trying to move into your "space" and attacking you by accident.
This is possible for both the player AND monsters, if one cannot see
the other.

From the guidebook

" One thing to avoid entirely is any kind of fire magic in the forest. The
whole forest becomes hostile. "

Combine this with the increasing strength of monsters if you are using the
latest version and you have two of the ingredients required in a recipe for
disaster.

Nah, this is the recipe for disaster:

1 Scroll of Chaos Resistance
1 Potion of Raw Chaos

Mix well.

However, fire bolts don't aggravate trees if they can't see you.
Fireballs and Burning Hands do.

brojek.
