Killing Guards

I'm wondering if killing a few of the city guards would have any
consequences. I thought doing that might be an idea to rack up a little
extra experience.

But it doesn't stay that way right? I tried it and killed a bunch of
guards, then went in to see Aribeth, came out again, and the guards weren't
giving me any trouble.

Is that the way it works? Are there any consequences other than that?

Don't guess so unless it's implemented in the model.. maybe an alignment
hit? I never was that evil to run around slaying inocents when their was a
bigger problem in the city...

It's a matter of distance and vitnesses. If you attack a non-hostile
character and at least one of its fellows is within the visual range, it
will turn hostile and attack you. This involves the change of your
reputation vs. the whole faction, and from this moment every member of the
same faction will be hostile too.

One point are the relations between the different factions (which are hidden
for you). If you become an enemy to faction A, it might happen that you
automatically will piss off faction B too, and if an important quest giver
is a member of B, you will probably be screwed.
