Hello, I got a friend who's using my G3258 and h81m board, I currently have a FX-8150 in my main rig but I plan on upgrading to a Ryzen 5 1600 in September.

My friend is starting to think about getting their own CPU and mobo but they have a really tight budget. They've been getting into streaming and video editing lately, and the g3258 isn't cutting it as much as it used to anymore.

I'm stuck between whether or not I should suggest a Ryzen 3 build, upgrade to an i5 or sell him my parts at a discounted price, considering eventually I'll need to get rid of my them (CPU, fxa990 board and 8gb of DDR3 ram. he already has 8gb and that would further upgrade him to 16gb)

Currently a Ryzen 3 build would cost him more money, and I understand would be better off in the long run. However, he's not a high-end gamer and only has a 60hz panel. Plus, I don't mind making a payment plan with him for my parts (which I wouldn't be able to do with brand new parts).

I would also have to note that his current build is also very budget oriented because he's using an old GTX 550 ti.

I know my CPU has no upgrade path, and bad IPC, compared to the other CPU choices... but 8 more GB of ram and 6 more cores would still be a benefit for his tasks right?

Solution
Your old fx honestly to me sounds ideally suited for his use.

Its certainly not going to hold back a 550ti at all & for streaming & video editing it's far far better than that old pentium.

So id say yeah, let him have your old fx gear on a deal , its a good option for both of you , you honestly wouldn't get that much for it on the second hand market.

Probably a deal where you both end up winners really ;-)
Could you send me your specs, and his specs seperately please.
The ryzen 1600 is really good for multitasking and gaming, from my experience. Because it has 6 cores, it will be good for video editing.

Solution
my specs are;
FX-8150 with a Hyper 212 evo
gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
8gb of corsair vengeance
GTX 1060

his specs are
G3258 with stock cooler
Asrock H81 Pro Btc
8gb of Kingston value ram
GTX 550ti

the only things that aren't going to be changing is the graphics cards. Currently it will run about $300+ CAD for him to get on the Ryzen platform (if he goes with the Ryzen 3 1200) but like I said, I'd be selling my parts to him at a discounted price and most likely on a payment plan of some sort because he's on a really tight budget.

Yeah, I just didn't really want to feel like I was doing a disservice to a friend while also trying to get rid of my current parts. lol

Yeah, I kinda figured it was a gamble but I'm basically throwing the ram in for free considering I won't have any use of it
