Hi Guys,

I was looking for a an inexpensive SSD drive to use as "Garbage Can". What do I mean. I want to direct all temp files to that drive, because it keeps constantly filling my SAMSUNG 750 Evo 500GB. I had half of the drive free at this moment after cleaning some garbage i end up with 100 plus GB, which is frustrating. So my intention is to direct all that garbage to this new drive.

I have options like the ADATA 120GB for $49.99 or the SanDisk 250GB Ultra for $79.99 and in between I found a not so known brand KingSpec (Chinese), which offers a drive of 180GB for $56.99. Compared to the ADATA i get with this one an extra 60GB for $7, While compared to the SanDisk, which is 70GB larger costs $23 more. If you take the price per 1GB, the KingSpec and the SANDISK are head to head. My question is: Would the KingSpec be worth it? I searched around and there is nothing to be found about this drive (maybe it is new), but there are other models where the comments are divided. What is interesting about this company is that it started in 1995 and was ISO certified for SSD, but I don't know for sure if it still is. I would appreciate your comments so I can make my final decision.

All drives can be found at Amazon for the prices specified.

Here are the links on Amazon for the 3 drives:

Solution

Since it is intended for, as you say, garbage, why not an inexpensive HDD? Sure, it won't be as fast as a SSD, but you can get more capacity for the same or lower price..

Thanks guys for the suggestions, very much appreciated.

Let me put it in another perspective, would you still suggest an inexpensive HDD, if that temporary folder was also used to edit and or render video? In other words it will also be used as temporary folder for lets say After Effects.

I also want windows to stay as fast as possible, but instead of windows using the Samsung it should use this new drive.

Thanks for your help.

If you're actually going to use it (video editing, etc), don't buy an off brand SSD. They're not THAT much cheaper than the good ones.
That is no longer the definition of "temp folder".

While that might be a "Temp folder", it is certainly NOT a "Garbage folder"!

I agree with USAFRet, Get a KNOWN brand SSD for work of that type. I wouldn't risk using a no-name SSD. All you have to do is lose ONE video, and all of a sudden, you've eaten up any cost savings the cheaper SSD may have given you.

Thanks guys I agree in that aspect and sorry for not expressing myself correctly with the Temporary folder.

May be if I put it this way it will be more clear what I mean.

Under the Windows Drive (Samsung) there is this folder C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\. Windows and all apps use it (After Effect included) to do in between tasks like pre-processing (temporary tasks) prior to saving the final product to the final destination. There is also the much hated Temp folder which Windows uses for al garbage it creates. This is the folder I try to clean as frequently as possible. This folder grows to around 100GB and sometimes more bi-weekly and it is time consuming to clean it up, because it has to be done in safe mode through the command prompt. The cleanup application of Microsoft does as if it cleans it but, older files are not removed and I have to do it manually as expressed previously.

That’s why I used the term Garbage, because at the end of the day it becomes garbage. But if I put this folder on a HDD it will slow down the whole system.

The idea is to reallocate all this temp folders to the Inexpensive SSD. If I put it on a SSD even with less performance than the Samsung, the performance will decrease but not in such a way that it will be that noticeable. In other words I go out the easy way by just formatting that drive every two weeks.

The processed videos and all other important material are saved in a secure drive and will never be saved on this new drive.

That’s why I was looking at the three drives mentioned previously. The ADATA is just enough, but is very limited to the two weeks, while the KingSpec would give me a little more room to handle and of course the SanDisk will give me a month or even more before cleaning it up. As we all know when a SSD starts filling up, it starts slowing down and that’s why I’m looking for advice in this aspect. I was inclining for the KingSpec, because of the size and the price, but it must be something inexpensive that will survive heavy “abuse” for at least 3 years. That’s why I was asking about your thoughts about this brand.

Thanks again for your patient reading my comments.

PS: The Temp folder grows to that size in my opinion to inefficient cleanup after finalizing a project of different applications.

First off, Formatting a SSD every two weeks or so is NOT a recommended practice as it will decrease the lifespan of your SSD.
Second, I don't know that using a regular, 7200RPM HDD for your purpose would really be that noticeable as slower than a SSD.

It is your money, you can do as you please. I would get a higher capacity HDD.

Solution
Thanks Clarkjd,

I agree about the life span of the SSD, but that's why I mention that it must at least survive 3 years of heavy abuse and be inexpensive (for me inexpensive is something way below 100 USD in this case). I don't see any of us using in three years’ time a SSD that is 240GB or less. The actual minimum is almost set at 500GB and I expect in three years’ time it will be 1TB. The 240 will always work with windows, but not with the Temp Folder on it. And time has shown us that every time that folder becomes more space consuming with every new version or update of Windows.

But going back to the HDD and SSD. Sorry if I’m stubborn about this, but everything windows does goes through this temp folder, will this for sure not slow down the system when using a HDD instead of a SSD?

Thanks for your patience.

My 3 main systems here are SSD only.
8 drives across 3 systems.

Your primary drive of 500GB should work fine. Just like my primary drive of 500GB (850 EVO).
I'm not sure what the problem it is that you're having with the temp file, etc.

In my system:
1. 500GB 850 EVO - OS and all applications. 18 months old.
2. 250GB 840 EVO - photo work. 3 years old
3. 250GB 840 EVO - CAD and video work. 3 years old
4. 960GB Sandisk Ultra II- Games, doc, all that other stuff. 2 years old
5. 120GB Kingston HyperX - cache and scratch space for #2 & 3. This drive is now 6 years old
