I don't know where to ask this question since there is not a Chromebox section but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. Or if the moderator wants to move this question to a more appropriate section.

Dad called me and said his ASUS Chromebox was not working. The power light comes on the box but nothing happens. After some fiddling I reset the computer with a paperclip and got a screen to pop up. It says the operating system cannot be found. I downloaded the recovery program from Google from another computer and installed it onto a thumb drive.

The computer acts like it accepted the reinstall but after it reboots I get the same error message.

This sounds just like when a PATA or SATA fails.

I've included some photos:

Before I order another one of these, can someone tell me if the hard drive has failed in this thing?

Before I start throwing money at this thing. In your opinion does it sound like that's what has happened?

Thanks.

Some reviews on Amazon have reviewers who replaced with 256GB drive. (M. 2 SSD 2240 size and I replaced the default 16gb with a Transcend 256gb SSD)

Well I replaced the hard drive and still nothing. Watched all the Youtube videos. CRTL D doesn't work as described in one video. So I just ordered a new Chromebox. This time an HP. I guess I'll call ASUS and see if they have a solution.
