How come many people hate the HPs and instantly notice the sound difference though? even here I noticed that most of the returned cloud 2s are HP version and not Kingston

My guess, placebo effect due to different brand name on the device.

E.g if you were to blindfold someone and put 2 different headsets on them to test difference in sound quality, while in fact you put the same headset on them on 2nd time, then brain essentially expects the 2nd headset to sound different, and majority of people would also say that the 2nd headset sounds different from the 1st one as well, despite it is the very same headset.
