I have a gigabyte z97x gaming 7 motherboard with a M.2 10 gb/s slot. On my motherboard specs it doesn't say if it runs at x4 or x2. so i don't know if buying this ssd will be a waste of money or not. because if my m.2 slot isn't x4 than its extra power is essentially useless. and while im here is it even compatible with my motherboard?Ive read people saying crucial m.2 cards aren't compatible with asus motherboards. any help will be appreciated. The m.2 slot is new to me so i don't want to make a $500 mistake.

Not a complete waste, but mine on a x99 Gigabyte UD4 only ran at 792 Read and 649 Write before I bought a Lycom x4 adapter on Amazon and moved it to my PCIe slot.

Lycom DT-120 M.2 PCIe to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter (Support M.2 PCIe 2280, 2260, 2242)

ATTO score after Lycom in PCIe slot : read 1400 write 653

Either way I don't really think it's worth it to use up 4 pcie lanes on a z97 chipset unless you're sure you will never need to upgrade to an SLI configuration. Guessing from the fact that you're willing to pay $500 for an ssd you probably have a pretty strong nvidia gpu such as a gtx 980 or higher. However, chances are you won't really benefit as much from a high performance ssd as you would from a second gpu. Most normal m.2 drives will be more than adequate for a gamer since you don't actually stand to gain any performance increase in games.

I could be wrong though and you might be doing a lot of video editing or other work that relies on file i/o and would stand to benefit from the increased speed, but even then it would probably be better to get a couple sata3 drives instead.

10Gb/s equals x2. The HyperX Predator is x4 so if you buy it, it will work but you won't get advertised Read/Write speeds. They will be around half of advertised.

You need a motherboard with a 32Gb/s M.2 slot in order to get advertised Read/Write speeds from the HyperX Predator.
