The amp in the sub has gone bad. It'll cost me $90 to ship it out and have it fixed. Obviously the satellites are still good. Any reasonable alternatives?

To be honest, I would buy a reciever that will hook-up to your sound card and accepts connections just like those on the back of your dead amp. All you need is a few adapters. The reciever is worth it and it does much more. Save the $90 and get somthing from Yamaha.

As for the subwoofer. I would replace it with somthing different. It is pretty weak compared to the power of the satalites. You can get pretty cheap subs from http://www.partsexpress.com that will make the promedias look small and sound cruddy. I hear a lot of good reviews from the Titanic mk3 series.

Thats the best solution in the long run but will cost you more $$$.

I was worried I was being a bit vague, but that's exactly what I had in mind! Thanks for the advice and the linx, Clob.

You can buy a cheap receiver at a used stereo store or thrift store.

I have used Parts Express to buy items to make speakers. They are a good source.

The idea here is to shop around and find somthing that you like and will suit your needs perfectly. If at all possible, should should listen before you buy. You may be surprised at what you get.
