Hi peeps,

Ok, I have Googled and only really found out that they appear about 12
hours into the game. But I need to know something...

I am about 3 hours in, and it seems I have the ability to create the
parts necessary to make a lightsabre, except I don't have anywhere near
the amount of components.

My question is, should I start using up all my components now, to
create the lightsabre parts, one by one, or will I just discover/earn a
lightsaber later on? It seems awfully expensive to waste all these
components if there's no need.

Thanks in advance.

You will find them on your journey. I don't think you can make
any of them.

You'll find what you need...plus *slight spoiler*

The parts that are needed for building a lightsabre cannot be crafted - you
will get them as quest rewards or loot.

Don't get too fixated on the '3 hours'/'12 hours' thingy - people play at
different speeds. For example, my first run took 60+ hours and I got the
first sabre after roughly 20 hours (I was in no particular hurry to build
one since I had decent vibro swords). You will be able to build your
lightsabre shortly after you are allowed to travel the galaxy freely.

once you pick up bor dur (whatever) you get a "let me teach you how to make
one" conversation on the ship. the next ground mission you do you will find
all the parts. I think that they're all on dantooine.

I found a killblaster in some weird place. at first it didn't seem powerful
on the specs si I ignored it, later when I started to voyage with different
NPC's I needed to outfit them with guns and one of them was making a
killing, I checked the stats of that gun again and in the description it has
"kills with first shot". well I had to have that one myself, now I don't use
anything else.

later I found out how to duplicate items in the inventory, so I made 30
killblasters and I outfitted everyone with 2 each, now the biggest gangbang
is just a walk in the park.

They are wherever you go first. Once you have all the parts, the journal
will update and all future 'sabre part' candidate drops/rewards will be
complete sabres - even if you haven't combined your parts into a sabre yet.

Note: Bao-Dur stops making unlimited amounts of shields if and when you
have him build your sabre (which you can do in the field, no workbench
required).

Sounds like something from a mod. Never seen something like that in the
game.

However, ranged weapons can get really powerful if you upgrade them fully.
Outfit your sidekicks with pairs of those and watch your enemies fall
before you even get in melee range (unless you have Force Jump). Of course,
the fun pales quickly and then you'll equip them with single Field Survival
pistols (1-4 dmg) and Stun Batons (1-6).

As regards the crafting angle of the OP's question: if the effective Repair
skill rank of the Exile (or the party leader?) is high enough then items
can be broken down into the same number of components as was needed to make
them. This means you don't have to fear making irreparable mistakes when
crafting items, because you can always recover the components used once
your Repair skill is high enough. So you can go flat-out on melee upgrades
during early levels and once you get your lightsabre you can melt down the
melee upgrades and make lightsabre upgrades, for example.

I've no mods or cracks, just the official patch. I think I found the
killblaster on the ship docked to the fuel mining station that I blew up
when I left. very early in the game. it wasn't until a few planets later
that I realised what it was.
