Noctua NT-H1 and Grizzly Kryonaut are probably the best pastes around today as far as ease of application, cleaning, life, performance goes.

I personally do not use paper towels for cleaning as they are not reliable for being lint free, which is important. The best thing, and very cheap, is coffee filters. Clean the cpu/pump base until the filters remain basically free of discolorations from the old paste. Just do not soak the filters, a little isopropyl alcohol goes a long way.
