Hi there.

I'm experiencing a problem on on of my machines that is running windows 7 pro, where after typing my password for my user profile, the screen goes black and I only have a mouse cursor, the PC does not progress from there.

I am able to press ctrl + alt + DEL to get the menu but selecting the task manager has no results.

I can also log in to safe mode. i did that and was able to run a virus scan, and removed a virus that was found.

There is no disc in the drive, I enabled low resolution mode, checked for any recent updates that was installed, ran system restore, created new user (welcome screen takes forever to log in) - none of these worked.

Any advise as what i must try and do will be greatly appreciated.

My next step is to try run sfc /scannow to see if this will yield any results.
I do not want to resort to having to factory reset the machine as I would like to see if i resolve this issue first.

Thank you in advance

Adrian

Solution
Sounds like the desktop is not starting for some reason. Since you can access the Task Manager, let's try to jumpstart it! Open up the Windows Task Manager and on the Applications tab, click "New Task..." from the bottom right. In the new window, type explorer.exe and hit enter. Hopefully this should load your desktop. This may not solve your issue entirely, but it may be a temporary solution.
