L.E.D. light flashing? what does it mean?

why is it blinking? the green light stays solid while the red light blinks. it stops for 2 -5 seconds and then blinks again. their are many blinking patterns as well. thanks!

there is nothing in the dvd drive though, i even ejected it the dvd part so it can open and the red ligt still blinks

OP, id suggest this as best answer

If you are in Windows it will perform maintained and pre read things it thinks you will use often(based on past use).

If the system is new it will also go to work indexing files for faster search.

It will also write some data from memory to the hard drive(page file and system logs).

It is normal.

File system journaling most likely. Journaling enables fast file system recovery after a crash because the last stable state of the disk drive has been written to the drive.
