I built my PC myself about two years ago. I keep all the drivers up to date, install all windows updates, have anti-virus protection, and I don't download any illegal products. (No pirating, not judging, just not partaking.) Yet I still have many issues with running games smoothly. Not just new games either, many old games as well. Examples of games I've had issues with are Far Cry 4, Far Cry 3, Battlefield 3 & 4, the Total War series games, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, Overlord, Payday 2, Star Wars The Old Republic.
In some games the stuttering is minor and I can ignore it (Ex: Far Cry & Battlefield) but in other games the lag was overwhelming (The Bureau and overlord). Some issues have been lighting related such as flickering (Far Cry 3 and Payday 2). The symptoms are also sporadic, sometimes the games run amazing, the next time horrible. The symptoms also do not seem to be related to the quality I set the games on. Ex: Far Cry 3 on Low stutters just as much as on Ultra.
I have researched and tested my products but never found a resolution to my issues. I've stopped short of paying anyone to look at my PC because I'm afraid they would find nothing wrong with it just like I have and then I would be wasting money.
Am I just over estimating the performance my PC is capable of? I feel like I have put a lot of time and money into my PC and it should perform admirably. I understand if I can't run Far Cry 4 on Ultra, because that game is new. But games from 2007 like Overlord I don't think should be an issue.
Please help. I'll take any advice or leads I can get. Thank you for your time.
