So Battlefield 5 is often laggy in 1080p + medium details on my machine: old CPU i5-4440 from 5 years ago, 16GB RAM DDR3, GTX 960 and a Solid State Hard Drive.

My budget allows me to either buy a GTX 1660 Super or a modern i5 + mobo.

Which option is more likely to make BF5 lag-free on my machine?

Solution
Thanks guys.

@WildCard999 I need to spend less than $350, $300 would be good. I like your idea of upgrading CPU+MB to tackle the issue, because next year I can complement that with a new GPU for Battlefield 6! If you could make a specific product suggestion that would be really cool.

Your GPU is good enough to play BFV on Medium ~70 FPS. I recommend you upgrade your CPU/Mobo and possibly RAM.
If you're brave I recommend you get a 1650S instead and then move to the used market for mobo and CPU.
up to you, either way you'll be able to play it at 60 fps stable atleast
