Lame mp3 encoding during video capture?

When recording video on an xp machine, can I use the Lame mp3 encoder
to encode the audio on the fly? I've tried every vid recording prog
(virtualvcr, ize, etc) and when I use the lame mp3 codec, I always get
zero samples in the output file. I'm sure I have the codec installed
correctly, because I can take an "input avi file" and properly convert
it to mp3 using virtualdub. Even in virtualdub, though, video capture
encoding produces zero samples (no sound).

Is there any free mp3 codec that works? I just want to have a "one
step" video recording process.

Perhaps there is some combination that will work, but my
experience has been that *no* audio compression on the fly
capture solutions exist other than those implemented in the
capture hardware (the direct to DVD format kind of stuff).
I have tried as well, and cant get any further than you did.

If you're using VBR with LAME, this will NEVER work, as it
cannot predict what bitrate to use on the fly as it receives
the audio-it doesn't know what the audio will look like. Try
a CBR mode.

But, it only takes a minute or two (well, at least HERE it
does) to compress even two hours of audio after the fact,
so I don't worry about it.

That depends, I can do in Linux:
rec -r 44100 -c 2 -s w -t raw /dev/fd/1 | lame -r -s 44.1 -m s -x - q.mp3
This asumes you have input from whatever it is from the mixer.
But source can of cause also be something else.

Thanks. Yes - I wanted to avoid the extra step. Plus, the extra
first step takes a lot of extra hard disk space.

Normally, when I record stuff, I get the compression of the vid/aud
down to 3MB/min. If I first record without audio compression, I am
using about 13MB/min. It just kills me to use 4 times as much disk
space as I need for this first pass.

I notice that most of these windows progs have the same common
interface for audio compression (even the windows sound recorder).
You would think that if they have a pulldown list of selections, it
would be there for a reason. Yet, in every program, they just seem to
do nothing.

I dunno - modern software appears to be in the model-T stage. You
have to set the choke, manually adjust the spark timeing, and hand
crank the engine.
