LAN connected but internet not working

Hello,

So I am still having this issue, and been having it for a month, I finally decided to look into it but I just cant figure it out. So my PC is connected through an ethernet cable that is connected through a TP link which is connected to a modem. So, I thought the issue was with my internet provider, but it turns out thats not the case, because wifi works on all devices, and so does ethernet connections on other devices. I called the TP link manufacturer, we tested out the TP link on other devices and they connected just fine. I believe the problem might be my PC. So currently on my PC, I am using wifi that I have connected with a small WLAN adapter (small usb like wifi things). The wifi works on my pc but not the LAN. When I disable wifi and connect to the LAN it says that the LAN is actually connected, but when I try to open any websites, nothing loads.

Another interesting thing is that when I disable the LAN and enable it, or when I type ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew. I can access a website like google or youtube for literally 2 seconds, and then im back to the long loading which just tells me "no internet connection".

So I have absolutely no idea what the problem is, is my LAN not working? why does it say connected but no internet? why does it work for few seconds then stops again?

I really need help with this issue, I have been without internet for a month on my PC and been using wifi which is extremely slow.

Thank you

When Windows says CONNECTED, all it's telling you is, "I see something on the other end" or "I see the end of this street and its intersection" but it's not telling you what's beyond that nor is telling you can get out of town.

why does it work for few seconds then stops again?
This one no idea.

Networking, specially ethernet is quite simple. Use IPCONFIG, use PING, two most oftenly used commands to troubleshoot networks. Everybody on the same street must have a valid address (on the same subnet), which is normally managed by the DHCP server. When using ethernet, you are advised to disable WIFI, on the troubled PC.

Hi jsmithepa,

I already have the wifi disabled, I only turn it on to access the internet to check for solutions, but when I am checking ipaddress or ping im using the LAN. So I turned on the LAN, the ipconfig shows that everything has ip address, but when i ping it always says request timed out

What is it you are actually trying to ping? If you try to ping your default gateway do you get a response or request timed out? If you can ping your default gateway that's good news. If you perform a traceroute it will provide more information, simply use the following "tracert 8.8.8.8" on Windows. It will tell you where it's stopping and cannot get any further.

The fact you are receiving an IP address means the router is responding to DHCP DISCOVER messages. Is your DHCP config correct on the router? i.e., the IP configuration within the local DHCP server matches up with the IP configuration of the LAN interface itself?

So I pinged my own ip and it all connected, the pings that time out or says packet loss are any other pings.
I did the tracert 8.8.8.8 and all i got was
1 4m 8ms 4ms dsldevice.attlocal.net (192.168.1.254)
All the others were just * * * just stars

if this is a new mb make sure the lan chipset in the bios is set right. most have two settings. default and one setting to boot from network. make sure your lan port not set to boot to lan network.. if your mb has those killer network chipset download the newest driver from killler.if it an intel or relteck make sure the newest drivers are installed. also check that the mb has the mei drivers and bios if it an intel mb. wrong or bad mei drivers will not let onboard port work.

The fact you can ping our own IP address shows the TCP/IP stack on your network adapter is working correctly. Give it another test trying ping 127.0.0.1.

So I'm guessing "192.168.1.254" is your default gateway? Your DSL router?

In that case, the output of the traceroute indicates that your PC can successfully reach the DSL router when generating a packet towards 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS server) but the DSL router doesn't know how to route it any further.

You mentioned that the following
because wifi works on all devices, and so does ethernet connections on other devices.

Do these Ethernet connections works when connected to the same ethernet cable going into the same port? Are you able to screenshot the LAN settings & DHCP settings for that specific LAN port interface?

Also, do other wired ethernet connections get the same LAN network assigned? An IP address within 192.168.1.1 -> 192.168.1.253 with a default gateway of 192.168.1.254?

Yes, 192.168.1.254 is my default gateway

pinging 127.0.0.1 gave me this:

C:\Windows\system32>ping 127.0.0.1

Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

My PC is connected through a tp link, but I checked the settings on a different PC thats connected to the modem, it had the same default gateway and the ip address was 192.168.1.250

We have a another tv device thing also attached through tp link but it works fine for that, and I tried my own tp link with the same wire on a different pc and it instantly worked. This seems to just be a problem with my PC and it's been months and I cant figure out the problem. I recently downloaded driver booster and got the latest update for my LAN and it didnt work still.

Very strange. Your network adapter seems to be functioning correctly and the traceroute output shows it sends it traffic towards the router but gets no further.

Out of interest what if you was to statically assign an IP address to your LAN network adapter?

Use the following:

IP address: 192.168.1.249 (make sure this IP isn't being used by any devices)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

Also make sure you add DNS servers. I would recommend Google DNS servers or your ISPs DNS servers.

Google DNS:

Primary: 8.8.8.8
Secondary: 8.8.4.4

So I tried this and it works when opening google. But it only opens google, all other sites keep loading. When i disabled and enabled the LAN to see if it would remain working, it didn't, went back to everything loading or yellow triangle.

It is definitely a problem with my ethernet port connected to my motherboard.

I simply bought a USB ethernet port and just used that, i did not know they existed. got one for $19.99 from best buy and fixed this damn problem
